The Lord of the Rings‘ Sauron has become the perfect Christmas tree topper. In the trilogy of Lord of the Rings movies, adapted from the classic work of fantasy literature by J.R.R. Tolkien, the Dark Lord Sauron is depicted as a glowing fiery eye suspended between two branches of a curving structure atop the tower Barad-dûr in Mordor. In the movie canon, the reason Sauron is a disembodied eye during the timeline of the story is that he is too weak to take a proper physical form after the powerful One Ring was cut off his finger in battle.

On Twitter, user Nostalgic Gamer shared an image of the Lord of the Rings movies’ Eye of Sauron being used as a decorative Christmas tree topper. Check out the post below:

In the image, which is captioned with “The perfect tree topper does not exi….” the eye sits atop a Christmas tree that is decorated with a plethora of red lights. The eye itself also seems to be glowing, casting a sinister red aura on the ceiling above the tree.

While the Lord of the Rings trilogy featuring this particular iteration of Sauron concluded its theatrical run two decades ago, Sauron is still an important onscreen figure in fantasy pop culture. Most recently, the character has been the major antagonist of the Prime Video prequel show The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Although he operated in the shadows throughout the bulk of season 1, it was eventually revealed that Sauron was in disguise as Galadriel’s (Morfydd Clark) supposed ally and potential love interest Halbrand (Charlie Vickers).

Explaining Sauron’s Entire Plan In The Rings Of Power

Sauron finally reveals himself in Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’s season 1 finale. What was his grand plan, and what could happen in season 2?

It is unknown how Sauron will operate or what form he will take in The Rings of Power season 2. However, after revealing his identity, he will likely occupy an even larger role in the narrative. There is also a chance that Sauron will appear in the upcoming animated prequel movie The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, because while he doesn’t play a direct role in the titular war, he was conducting his dark business elsewhere in MIddle-earth at the time the movie takes place, some two-and-a-half centuries before the main trilogy.

On top of the animated movie, New Line Cinema has also announced that a new series of movies is set to be adapted from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, which seem likely to also feature Sauron in some capacity. This means that a Sauron-inspired tree topper has never been more relevant. Between the promise of more Sauron on Prime Video and the possibility of further appearances to come, the Dark Lord has hardly manifested his presence in more places at once in pop culture.
