Loki’s New MCU Title Makes Him Worthy In The Worst Way Possible

Loki’s New MCU Title Makes Him Worthy In The Worst Way Possible

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Loki season 2, episode 6, “Glorious Purpose”The Loki season 2 finale gives Tom Hiddleston’s God of Mischief a new title that makes him both a tragic MCU character and a selfless hero worthy of Thor’s power. Loki has been known as the God of Mischief, whose glorious purpose has been to wreak havoc wherever he goes. But after being captured by the TVA in Loki season 1 and committing to saving the multiverse in Loki season 2, the Norse god has completed a dramatic turn to heroism. Now, Loki hasn’t just dropped his God of Mischief title in favor of a more benevolent epithet, but he also has become as worthy, or even worthier than Thor himself, by the end of the Loki season 2 finale.

Sacrificing his freedom in order to save every timeline in the multiverse, Loki has literally taken all of reality in his hands. Loki may not be able to return to the MCU’s individual timelines now that he has become protector of the multiverse, and he has basically given up the rest of his extremely long lifespan so every other MCU character in the multiverse can retain their free will. Having created a multiversal version of the Norse World Tree Yggdrasil, Loki has likely become both the most powerful and the most selfless hero in the entire MCU, earning himself a new title to go with his impressive feat.

Loki Is Confirmed As The God Of Stories

By saving and organizing every existing timeline, Loki has become the God of Time — a higher being who keeps the past, present, and future of every universe from being erased by outside forces. However, Loki has also become the God of Stories, as he has placed everybody’s personal journey above his own. Loki understands that he won’t be able to continue writing his own story inside a specific timeline or at the TVA, so he devotes what could be the rest of eternity protecting reality in order to ensure that everyone else’s story is preserved across time and space.

Loki’s Sacrifice Makes Him Worthy

Loki Season 2 Cast and Thor Love and Thunder

Worthiness has been a key element for the Asgardians since Odin exiled Thor to Earth for being unworthy of the throne. In 2011’s Thor, Odin placed the condition that Thor could only access his Asgardian power if he earned the right to it, and the God of Thunder has prioritized his moral integrity since then. Loki, on the other hand, has wished to be worthy of Thor’s power and praise since they were children. But after multiple centuries trying to forge his own worthiness through mischief and evil, Loki has finally learned that the pathway to becoming truly worthy is placing others’ well-being above his own.

Before being captured by the TVA, Loki was obsessed with winning the throne, regardless of whether that meant the literal Asgardian throne or a metaphorical throne as the ruler of a lowly world like Earth. He didn’t really understand how Thor reached his true potential through personal development, which required a great deal of suffering and sacrifice. While the MCU’s original Loki redeemed himself too late, Loki‘s starring variant got the chance to turn his journey around and make the ultimate sacrifice, becoming the God of Stories, protector of time and the multiverse, worthy of Mjolnir if he ever had the possibility of wielding his brother’s weapon.

Loki’s Happy Ending Is Deeply Heartbreaking

Of course, making a sacrifice to become a hero isn’t a temporary mission. Just like Thor had to let go of the throne, his home, his family, and Jane Foster, Loki also has to let go of many of the things he wishes he could retain. Loki’s new life at the TVA, Sylvie, Mobius and his other friends — all of them made Loki feel like he had a true purpose for the first time in his life. Yet, Loki has to leave everyone behind if he really cares about them.

Even if Loki could extend the Time Loom’s last moments as much as possible or take advantage of his Time-Slipping abilities to rewind the clock indefinitely, staying with his friends back at the TVA would leave the multiverse without someone to keep it from breaking apart. After talking with Mobius, Sylvie, and He Who Remains in the Loki season 2 finale, Loki accepts that he’s doomed to an eternity alone, but he feels satisfied with the fact that his efforts to save reality result in his friends being free to write their own stories. That is Loki’s glorious purpose, which ultimately made him worthy of a throne he didn’t seek.
