Loki Video Reveals Funny Backstory of Tom Hiddleston Not Getting Thor Role

In a short animated video uploaded on YouTube, Loki star Tom Hiddleston shared his journey of getting the titular role and joining the MCU, including a competition between him and Thor actor Chris Hemsworth. The actor made his MCU debut in 2011 portraying the God of Mischief in Kenneth Brannagh’s Thor, before returning as the main antagonist of 2012’s The Avengers. The actor has since portrayed the character in 4 following MCU feature films, and 2 Disney+ series.

Hiddleston first appeared as Loki in Thor, playing the jealous brother to Hemsworth’s God of Thunder. Loki sabotages Thor’s coronation and plays a part in his exile, before learning of his true heritage as the heir to the king of the Frost Giants. Following Odin falling into the Odinsleep, Loki takes the throne of Asgard and launches an attack on Earth and Jotunheim, only to be thwarted by a now humbled Thor. With Loki becoming Disney+’s most popular Marvel show, it is more clear than ever that Hiddleston’s trickster is one of Marvel’s most popular characters, though he originally aimed for a different role in the MCU.

In an animated video titled “Untold: Tom Hiddleston” uploaded to the Disney Youtube channel, Hiddleston narrated a short summary of Loki’s character, discussing how he relates to the character, as well as a story from when he auditioned for the role of Thor. When training to audition for Thor, Hiddleston revealed that he and Hemsworth kept track of their times and scores for various exercises on a board in the gym. Hiddleston tried to match Hemsworth’s progress but failed to do so. Hiddleston also discussed the call he had with Feige when he learned that he got the role of Loki. Check out the video below.

Hiddleston previously shared his Thor audition tape on Jimmy Fallon when promoting Loki, where he also revealed that he never originally auditioned for Loki. Fans first got a glimpse of this tape through the special features of Thor: The Dark World, where a blonde Hiddleston wields a replica of Mjolnir, swinging the prop around and acting out firing thunder at a foe. The video also contained a small clip of the actor rehearsing lines of dialogue. Hiddleston then stated that he feels Marvel ultimately chose the right man to portray the God of Thunder.

Hiddleston’s history of portraying Loki is one of the more interesting tales behind the scenes of the MCU. Despite never intending to play the God of Mischief, he ultimately became the ideal candidate in the eyes of Kevin Feige and Kenneth Brannagh. Following this, Hiddleston has become just as recognizable and beloved as Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr., and Chris Evans. From appearing on stage at San Diego Comic-Con 2013 in-character during a Marvel Studios panel, to eventually being one of the producers of Loki, the actor has embraced the role, recently revealing he’d gladly play Loki for the rest of his life. With the first season’s success and confirmation of a second season, fans can look forward to Hiddleston returning as the God of Mischief.
