Loki Season 2 Head Writer Clarifies Whether Marvel Pushed For Avengers 5 & 6 Setup: “We Were Just Siloed Off”

Warning: SPOILERS lie ahead for Loki season 2!

Despite fleshing out the Multiverse Saga’s central antagonist, head writer Eric Martin assures Marvel didn’t push for Loki season 2 to directly set up Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars. The return of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Disney+ show has seen Tom Hiddleston’s eponymous God of Mischief trying to prepare for the arrival of Kang the Conqueror while also keeping the larger multiverse from falling apart following the death of He Who Remains. Loki and Mobius tried to use the help of one of Kang’s variants, Victor Timely, though he was instantly spaghettified in the shocking episode 4 cliffhanger, seemingly killing off the one good variant of the villain thus far.

In honor of the show’s most recent episode, Screen Rant spoke exclusively with Head Writer Eric Martin to break down some of the big reveals from Loki season 2, episode 5, “Science/Fiction”. When asked about whether Marvel pushed for the season to directly set up Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars, Martin assured there was never a studio mandate to do so, allowing him and his writing team to go off and make “the best season of TV we possibly could”. See what Martin shared below:

No, no. We’re really fortunate in that we were just siloed off and were just writing the best season of TV we possibly could, and there weren’t conversations about we had to do this or that. It was just like, “Earn this. Do a great job.”

How Loki Has Already Set Up The Next Avengers Without Feeling Forced

Even looking back towards season 1 of the Disney+ show, Loki has been steadily building towards the next two Avengers movies, properly introducing the concept of the multiverse to audiences along with the first tease of Kang the Conqueror in He Who Remains. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania seemed poised to be the biggest step forward with an actual variant named Kang, only for him to be killed off in the movie’s climax. It did, however, introduce the Council of Kangs in its post-credits, revealing the wide range of variants plotting a new multiverse war after the death of He Who Remains.

Loki season 2 has offered some glimpses of how the MCU is building towards The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars, primarily with the introduction of Victor Timely and Loki’s fears of Kang’s impending arrival. Interestingly, episode 4 took to seemingly killing off this variant, though episode 5 has set up the possibility of his being saved as Loki finally has gained a grip on his time-slipping abilities. The penultimate episode concluded with him arriving back at the TVA moments before Timely was spaghettified, making it likely Timely will not only be saved, but could also have some longevity in The Multiverse Saga.

Even as the show has continued to explore Kang and his incoming arrival, though, Loki season 2 has largely succeeded with critics and audiences for staying true to its story and characters. Rather than take the opportunity of having Majors on board in a bigger role to feature multiple variants, the show has kept its focus on the growth of its returning characters and how important their individual arcs are as much as their group efforts to save the multiverse. With reports indicating that the season 2 finale will offer a more direct setup for The Kang Dynasty, it will be interesting to see how the show closes its arcs while setting the floor for Kang’s arrival.

The Loki season 2 finale premieres on Disney+ on Thursday, November 9.
