Lois Lane Finally Steals Superman’s Spotlight in New ACTION COMICS Story by Rainbow Rowell

Move over, Superman: Lois Lane gets her own Action Comics spotlight in 2024 with a new story by Rainbow Rowell and Cian Tormey. After her celebrated runs at Marvel Comics, Rowell — a best-selling romance writer in her own right — makes her DC Comics debut in a three-part Action Comics back-up story starring DC’s original love interest and leading lady.

Rowell and Tormey present their take on Lois Lane beginning in Action Comics #1067, which arrives July 10th, 2024. The three-part back-up story will run through Action Comics #1069 and is part of 2024’s ongoing “Superman Superstars” initiative for the Action Comics title. The creative team will be joined for these three issues by Gail Simone and Eddy Barrows, who offer a lead story starring Lois Lane’s love interest, Superman.

While focusing on Lois’ career as an essential journalist — and, recently, the Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Planet — this story will most assuredly have its romance elements. As Rowell says:

“I really like it when comic book romances last…There’s a lot of story to tell after two people say yes to each other. So—even though I was a little nervous about diving into the DC Universe—I couldn’t resist the chance to write a love story that is also a newsroom story, and still a superhero story.”

The first of Simone and Barrows’s three issues kicks off when a massively powerful alien race makes Earth their arena. Superman, DC’s Man of Steel, must stand alone against impossible challenges that threaten locations all around the world and the lives of those he loves. Action Comics #1067 begins a not-to-be missed epic tale of Superman’s strength, wit, and resourcefulness in an early stage of his public career!

The “Superman Superstars” initiative has been invigorating Action Comics with all-star creative teams since the beginning of 2024. The “I, Bizarro” arc by Jason Aaron and John Timms launched the program, soon followed up by the crossover event “House of Brainiac” by Joshua Williamson and Rafa Sandoval. Along with the main story by Simone and Barrows, Rowell and Tormey’s take on Lois Lane will give the beloved (and heroic) character a chance to tell her own story after spending many months — and, arguably, years — as a supporting character in her husband’s stories.

Rowell’s DC debut is a thrilling prospect for fans of her novels, of her Marvel comics, and of plain old-fashioned character-driven storytelling. The author of adult and young-adult romance novels like Attachments, Eleanor & Park, Fangirl, and the Simon Snow trilogy, Rowell also made a splash in the comic-book world with her Eisner-nominated runs on Runaways and She-Hulk, which continues on as The Sensational She-Hulk. With her sharp dialogue and eye for how interiority shapes character actions and interactions, Rowell is the perfect choice for a Lois-led story, and hopefully, this marks only the beginning of her time at DC.

Lois Lane’s Action Comics History Is Just as Significant as Superman’s

With Rowell and Simone Writing DC’s Flagship Title, Women Take Center Stage

Though Action Comics has long been known as a Superman title — seeing as the character made his 1938 debut in Action Comics #1 — it’s important to remember that Lois Lane also made her debut in Action Comics #1. Lois’ character is just as essential to the superhero genre as Superman himself, and it’s a joy to see her highlighted in her own story during the “Superman Superstars” initiative. That Action Comics will soon be helmed by two women — some of the most celebrated writers in contemporary comics — goes beyond being a cherry on top.

Along with Barrows and Tormey, Simone and Rowell will be stepping on to one of comics’ largest, most historic stages, and they will surely be up to the task. Just as Lois Lane is an essential part of Superman’s history, these women are becoming part of the larger metanarrative of “Superman history.” It’s rarely been a better time to be a fan of Lois Lane, especially as readers get to see the next chapter of her own story in Action Comics #1067, available July 10th from DC Comics.
