Locke & Key: The Main Characters, Ranked By Power

Locke & Key: The Main Characters, Ranked By Power

With Season 2 of Netflix’s hit supernatural fantasy series Locke & Key debuting on October 22, 2021, fans have tuned in to see how the titular family will navigate the magical keys that led to the revelation of the mysterious Black Door at the end of Season 1. With the demonic Dodge continuing to provide villainous scares, it’s up to young Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode to quell the deadly curse of Keyhouse and restore peaceful order at once.

Of course, to do so, the main characters in the show will need to wield magical powers bestowed to them by the various mystical keys hidden around the moldering Massachusetts mansion. To date, some have been more successful than others.

Scot Cavendish

Locke & Key: The Main Characters, Ranked By Power

The head of the Savini Squad filmmaking club and Kinsey’s early romantic interest, Scot Cavendish (Petrice Jones) is one of the main characters who haven’t many inherent magical powers to speak of. Instead, his power is a direct result of Kinsey showing him the Music Box Key, a magical mind-controlling device.

However, once Scot catches wind of Kinsey’s relationship with Gabe, he slowly withdraws from her while expressing regret over using the keys in the first place. Scot mounts enough courage to help the Lockes throw Dodge through the Black Door, but he’s largely powerless the rest of the way.

Eden Hawkins

Jackie’s best friend Eden Hawkins (Hallea Jones) draws her powers from demonic possession after being hit with a bullet at the end of Season 1. Under her demonic possession, Eden harnesses her powers to eat Karl’s face, slash Javi’s throat, and dispatch a pair of coast guards.

As an evil minion of Gabe, Eden’s powers increase throughout Season 2 when she manipulates the Music Box to attack Scot and later locates the Echo Key to exact revenge on Gabe. However, her inability to tell which demon is possessing Captain Gideon leads to her demise and renders her powerless in the end.

Nina Locke

Although she has no foreknowledge of keys existing, Nina Locke (Darby Stanchfield) ironically draws her power from alcohol abuse. Through trial and error, Nina learns that alcohol allows people to remember their past magical encounters, a loophole that allows her to bypass the Riffel Rule and telepathically witness her children being attacked by Sam. Thankfully, she overcomes her alcoholism, and avoids becoming one of the worst TV moms of the past decade.

In addition to being impervious to the Riffel Rule, Nina’s powers include discovering that the Mending Key can only restore inanimate objects and not living creatures, which prevents her from attempting to unwisely revive her husband.

Ellie Whedon

Tyler, Kinsey, and Ellie stand outside in Locke & Key

If knowledge is power, then Ellie Whedon (Sherri Saum) is one of the strongest characters in Locke & Key. As a former Keeper of the Keys, Ellie has direct contact with the magical keys and imparts all of the sage advice she learned from Rendell to his children. However, by accidentally conjuring Dodge with the Echo Key and stealing The Crown of Thorns, Ellie’s powers do more harm than good.

When the Keepers disband, Ellie also obtains the Identity Key, one of the most powerful keys in the house that enables her to transform back into her natural form once Dodge is defeated. All in all, Ellie is the most powerful non-Locke protagonist on the show.

Kinsey Locke

Kinsey Locke (Emilia Jones) derives much of her inherent powers from the secret Anywhere Key golden bracelet that was given to her by her deceased father, which allows her to travel anywhere she desires in a blink of an eye. Kinsey also saves her mother by using the Mirror Key when she becomes trapped.

Upon using the Head Key, Kinsey is able to rid her mind of all forms of fear and increase her bravery, which allows her to confront the Black Door. Along with Tyler, Kinsey’s most powerful moment comes in finding the Omega Key hidden in their father’s urn and using it to protect the fate of the universe. While felt for and at times hated, Kinsey also uses her power to wield a lasso and save Bode’s life in the mirror verse.

Bode Locke

Bode finds a key in the house on Locke & Key

Although he is the youngest Locke sibling, Bode (Jackson Robert Scott) is the most curious and the one who finds the largest amount of keys inside the family abode. Bode locates and uncovers the functions of the Ghost Key, Shadow Key, Anywhere Key, Music Box Key, Mirror Key, and Mending Key, which provides the entire family with the required magical powers to defeat Dodge.

Moreover, it’s Bode who makes the discovery that Dodge cannot physically steal keys from the Locke children when confronting Sam Lesser, which puts them in an advantageous position to best the demonic entity.

Dodge/Gabe

Dodge stands at a door with her back turned on Locke & Key

As the murderous and manipulative shapeshifting main villain of the show, Dodge (Laysla De Oliveira) is the most powerful antagonist on the show. Trapped in the walls of Keyhouse, Dodge tricks, taunts, torments, and terrorizes the Locke family to no end by using the various magical keys for her own evil ulterior motives, providing some of the chilling moments in Locke & Key.

Dodge tricks Bode into freeing her spirit with the Anywhere Key, begins to woo Kinsey as a boy named Gabe (Lucas Caravaggio) with the help of the Identity Key, and guides Kinsey and Tyler to open the Black Door with the Omega Key and cause the end of times. As the driving force of evil behind the entire series, Dodge’s power is difficult to overstate.

Tyler Locke

Haunted by his father’s death, Tyler Locke (Connor Jessup) is also the most skeptical sibling in the family. However, he slowly begins to accept the existence of magic, drawing his strength by finding and protecting the most powerful keys in the house. Along with his sister Kinsey, Tyler finds the most powerful Omega Key, which holds the entire fate of the world.

Moreover, Tyler uses the newly minted Alpha Key to waylay multiple minions including Jackie, Daniel, and ultimately Dodge by stabbing the demonic entity in the back of the head. As the reluctant hero who ends up assuming his father’s mantle, Tyler also uses the Head Key to implant knowledge in his mind which helps him confront his past. In defeating the biggest villain on the show, Tyler becomes the most powerful character to date.
