The ex-showrunner for the Lizzie McGuire reboot hopes that the series moves from Disney+ to Hulu. The show initially premiered back in 2001 on the Disney Channel and ran for two seasons before ending in 2004. Because of the show’s success, a movie was also released in 2003 titled The Lizzie McGuire Movie which went on to be a massive success among Disney Channel fans. Nothing was heard about the series after it came to a halt in ’04, that is until Disney revealed a slate of new programming that would be getting the reboot treatment for their brand new streaming service, Disney+. It was at D23 Expo last year that the reboot was officially announced, but its production has been a bumpy ride ever since.
Despite exciting news that Hilary Duff and the original cast of her family members would be returning, along with the return of Adam Lamberg as Gordo, the show has faced some tumultuous changes over the past couple of months. Most recently, the rebooted series lost its showrunner, Terri Minsky, over creative differences. Minsky also helmed the original series on Disney Channel, but her vision for the reboot didn’t quite mesh with the ideas that Disney+ had in mind. The series has yet to pick up production again since Minsky’s departure, but now she’s speaking out further about her departure and her hopes for the series moving forward.
During an interview with Variety, Minsky explained that she’s “proud of the two episodes” they shot, adding in that “Hilary has a grasp of Lizzie McGuire at 30 that needs to be seen.” She went on to say that she’d “love the show to exist,” but only if it “could be given that treatment of going to Hulu” and doing the show that she and her team were doing. She exclaimed that this is the part where she’s “completely in the dark” because “it’s important to [Minsky] that this show was important to people.” She wanted to do a show that was “worthy of that kind of devotion.”
Another Disney+ series also made a very recent transition to Hulu. The sequel TV show to Love, Simon, which is now officially titled Love, Victor, moved from Disney’s streaming service to Hulu due to its mature content. Disney ultimately believed that the issues explored in the series would be a better fit for Hulu’s audience rather than the Mouse House’s more family-friendly viewership.
Hopefully, the Lizzie McGuire reboot series will receive the same treatment and make the move to Hulu. Especially since the show explores Lizzie in her 30s, it’d be a much better fit for a more adult audience. Not only that, but the fans that grew up with the series are now of an age where that’d work more than if they remained more family-friendly for Disney’s brand. This will also be a perfect time to explore Minsky’s vision for the series, which seems like it would have been a wonderful ode to life-long fans of the show and its characters.
