Linda Blair Says She’s Not Involved In Upcoming Exorcist Trilogy Discussions

The Exorcist actor, Linda Blair, said that she is currently not involved in any discussions surrounding The Exorcists upcoming trilogy. The Oscar-winning 1973 film is based on William Peter Blatty’s book by the same name, which was released in 1971. Blatty adapted his own book for the film, which would be directed by William Friedkin (The French Connection). The story follows Chris (Ellen Burstyn), as she seeks out help from two priests when her 12-year-old daughter Regan (Blair) becomes possessed by a powerful demon.

It was reported earlier this week that Universal Pictures and Peacock acquired the rights for a new Exorcist trilogy for a reported $400 million. The films will be directed by David Gordon Green (Halloween Kills) and produced by Blumhouse. The story is set to be a direct sequel to the 1973 classic film. Burstyn is set to return in her role as Chris. Additionally, Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton) has been confirmed to be joining the cast as well. His character seeks out Chris after his child is possessed by an entity. The first installment of the new trilogy is set to hit theaters on October 13, 2023.

Blair tweeted in response to the fans asking if she will also be reprising her role in the upcoming Exorcist trilogy. She explained that she has not been involved in any of the conversations around the new films as of yet. However, Blair followed that up by stating her well wishes for those involved in continuing the story. She also noted her appreciation for the fans of the series who are so dedicated. While most fans of the original film primarily focus on that classic as an individual feature, The Exorcist actually belongs to a franchise. This includes sequels and prequels, which never came close to reaching the heights of the original. However, Exorcist II: The Heretic and The Exorcist III, in particular, have their loyal fans who continue to assert that these entries are underrated. In addition to the films, a television series premiered in September 2016. The new trilogy will be the first entry back into the franchise since.

The Exorcist is one of those classic film properties that is incredibly tricky to make. The fans are understandably cautious, although Green has managed to succeed so far with his Halloween trilogy that follows up the 1978 original. While Blair said that she hasn’t been involved in any of the conversations for the new trilogy, it’s possible that she could be somehow involved in the follow-up films. However, even if she isn’t, her performance as Regan will always be admired and referred to by movie lovers going forward. Stay tuned for more information regarding the upcoming trilogy. With Exorcist 2 having a 2023 release date, there’s still plenty of news to come.
