Lily Gladstone & Scorsese’s New Movie Might Land Them An Oscar (Not Killers Of The Flower Moon)

A Lily Gladstone and Martin Scorsese collaboration might land the duo an Oscar, and it may not be Killers of the Flower Moon. Since rising to prominence for her leading portrayal of Mollie Kyle in Killers of the Flower Moon, Gladstone has been considered a Best Actress favorite at the upcoming 2024 Academy Awards. Gladstone won the Golden Globe for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon and has a great chance to take the converted award home in March after becoming the first Native American to be nominated in an acting category in the history of the Academy Awards.

Scorsese, on the other hand, is no stranger to the Academy Awards, having been nominated for 24 Oscars throughout his illustrious career and winning Best Director for The Departed. Scorsese made Oscar history as well with the release of the 2024 nominations, becoming the oldest person ever to have been nominated for Best Director. He is also the most nominated living director of all time, surpassing Spielberg with a total of 10 nominations. Killers of the Flower Moon is undoubtedly one of the best movies of 2023, earning an impressive 10 Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Cinematography, and Best Editing.

Gladstone will star with Scorsese producing

After teaming up for Killers of the Flower Moon, Gladstone and Scorsese will collaborate once again on the recently announced film adaptation of The Memory Police. According to The Hollywood Reporter, which first broke the news exclusively, Gladstone will star in The Memory Police with Scorsese attached as an executive producer. The film will be an adaptation of the 1994 sci-fi novel of the same name written by Japanese author Yoko Ogawa. Ogawa’s work has won every notable Japanese literary award in existence, including the Akutagawa Prize and the Yomiuri Prize. Ogawa has also won the Shirley Jackson Award and the American Book Award.

Outside of Killers of the Flower Moon, Gladstone is known for her cinematic roles in 2016’s Certain Women, 2019’s First Cow, and 2022’s The Unknown Country. The Memory Police’s Premise & Tone Explained

Shares parallels with famous dystopian novels

Lily Gladstone as Mollie Kyle in Killers of the Flower Moon

The Memory Police is an immersive work of dystopian science fiction that follows a protagonist who is a novelist. The premise of the movie revolves around an unspecified island where the inhabitants experience instances of inexplicable shared memory loss that is enforced by a mysterious group known as The Memory Police. The novel was published in English in 2019 and became a finalist for the National Book Award, International Booker Price Award, and World Fantasy Award. Ogawa, whose body of work has not been entirely translated into English, is set to produce the film adaptation along with Scorsese.

Ogawa’s groundbreaking work is often compared to other masterful dystopian novels such as George Orwell’s 1984 and Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. Although the film will be based on Ogawa’s book, and Ogawa will be involved as a producer, The Memory Police will have a screenplay written by Charlie Kaufman. Kaufman is known for his incredibly original screenplays for movies such as Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Adaptation. With the combined writing efforts of Kaufman and Ogawa, along with the formidable producing experience of Scoarsese, The Memory Police should be a remarkably unique and poignant film.

Why The Memory Police Already Has “Awards Contender” Written All Over It

Kaufman is set to write with Reed Morano directing

The Memory Police is already an awards contender on paper, especially considering the additional hype a Lily Gladstone Oscar win would bring to the highly-anticipated project. Outside of Scorsese, Gladstone, and Kaufman’s brilliant influence, The Memory Police will be directed by Reed Morano, the acclaimed director of the first three episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale. Morano is also an experienced cinematographer known for her work on 2014’s The Skeleton Twins, 2014’s Looking, 2016’s Vinyl, and 2018’s I Think We’re Alone Now. Morano could potentially be both director and cinematographer on The Memory Police as she was in her 2015 film Meadowland.
