Lilo & Stitch Set Photos Reveal Live-Action Redesign For Stitch In Disney’s Remake

Following various setbacks to its production, a new set video from the Lilo & Stitch remake has offered the first look at the Disney characters in live-action. Based on the 2002 animated movie of the same name, the live-action project will follow the titular young girl as she and her older sister’s lives are thrown into further disarray with the arrival of the eponymous dog-like alien. Helmed by Marcel the Shell with Shoes On‘s Dean Fleischer Camp, the movie features both new and returning stars, including Chris Sanders as Stitch, Maia Kealoha as Lilo, Sydney Agudong, Billy Magnussen and Zach Galifianakis.

Nearly a year after filming was first set to begin, TikTok user @paulinapullara revealed a set video from the live-action Lilo & Stitch remake, revealing the first look at the live-action design for alien Stitch. The video shows various crew members working on a public street in Hawaii, preparing a shot for which the titular young girl and alien are driving around in a ride-on convertible car. The video also reveals the first look at Kealoha as Lilo, while Stitch can be seen represented with an adorable stand-in in the driver’s seat.

The Disney classic Lilo & Stitch is getting a live-action remake. Here’s everything we know about the return of the blue alien and his young friend.

Will Lilo & Stitch’s Production Problems Hinder Its Chances At Success?

Despite gaining steam in July 2022, the Lilo & Stitch remake has endured a variety of problems throughout its subsequent development and production. Having initially begun rolling in April 2023 after a delay from March of the same year, production had been shut down indefinitely after a fire broke out in a trailer on set, sparking an arson investigation to discover the cause of the incident. While May would finally see production get underway, the subsequent SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America strikes again put the production on an indefinite hold.

Even prior to filming, the Lilo & Stitch remake had come under fire for some of their casting choices on the movie. Adugong and Kahiau Machado’s casting as Nani and David were particularly met with controversy, as audiences accused the filmmakers of colorism and whitewashing for casting the characters due to their lighter skin, as well as Machado’s previous use of racial slurs on social media. Though Adugong is still onboard as nani, Kaipo Dudoit was hired to replace Machado as David.

These various controversies have certainly raised a lot of doubt about the Lilo & Stitch remake’s chances at success, particularly as many questioned Disney’s decision to continue remaking their beloved properties for live-action. Previous reports have indicated, however, that the studio may actually be considering a Disney+ release for the movie, which would help them avoid potential box office pitfalls akin to 2023’s The Little Mermaid, which wasn’t deemed a flop, but a disappointment with just shy of $570 million grossed against its $240 million production budget.
