While fans of outer space horror are mainly focused on the return of the Alien franchise in Ridley Scott’s upcoming Alien: Covenant, those who can’t get enough of that particular spin on the genre can also look forward to seeing Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds and Rebecca Ferguson battle alien microbes in the upcoming space station-set horror blockbuster Life as well. Now, a new poster and images tease the scares awaiting fans when the feature debuts in March of 2017.
Taking the form of a stack of complimentary close-ups, the poster focuses on the eyelines of the main characters arranged into a single image unified by the film’s title spread across all three panels, emphasizing the genre and the considerable presence of the acting talent lined up to take part in it. Despite being a lower-budget feature in terms of theatrical science-fiction films, Life has indeed assembled a potent cast of hot rising stars along with several veteran character actors.
Likewise, the new imagery focuses on the presence of the stars and the visual effects used to create a weightless effect reminiscent of present-day space travel conditions; an aesthetic decision that will likely help Life differentiate itself from the Alien franchise – which its premise admittedly shares several similarities with outside the broad subgenre of horror movies set in outer space.
The film (which was directed by Daniel Espinosa from a script by by Deadpool writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese) is set on the International Space Station and involves a team of astronauts tasked with investigating the first evidence of microbial life found on Mars. This situation literally grows out of hand when the Martian microbes prove to me much more assertive than their Earth counterparts – infecting various crewmembers and forcing them to act against their onetime colleagues.
Olga Dihovichnaya, Ariyon Bakare and Hiroyuki Sanada also appear, rounding out the film’s diverse cast. While Sony has been promoting the film fairly early for a mid-budget feature, Life was originally scheduled to open against Disney’s long-anticipated revival of the Pirates of The Caribbean franchise, Dead Men Tell No Tales, but moved to the relatively-less crowded late March release period shortly after the first trailer for the film was released online. Life is now slated to open against the big screen reboot of the Power Rangers franchise in theaters.
