LG Put An AI Brain In A Washing Machine

LG showcases a washing machine that’s smart enough to learn from its owner. Despite coming with a bevy of cutting-edge features, its primary function is just like any other washer, to clean clothing. With its smartphone game out of the way, LG’s other products, such as household appliances, are getting more of the spotlight.

LG has been operating for over 70 years, producing everything from television sets, display monitors, and refrigerators to cosmetics. LG’s reputation of thinking outside the box led to some outlandish products that stood out. Although some of these never see the light of day, like its expanding-screen smartphone, it seems like the tech giant’s still coming up with yet another quirky but creative piece of tech, only this time, it might actually show up at the nearest laundromat.

Enter the “WashTower,” a one-stop-shop washing solution for all of its owner’s laundry cleaning needs. In a press release, LG unveiled its new washing machine as part of its CES 2022 showcase, along with a list of its high-tech features. This washing machine incorporates Artificial Intelligence and LG Smart Pairing integration, all of which is designed to make the whole process of doing laundry “more convenient than ever.” LG Electronics president Lyu Jae-cheol claims that these “stunning” appliances offer “gentle fabric care and effortless clothing management,” which is pretty much exactly what it does.

What Makes LG’s WashTower Better Than Regular Washing Machines?

Just like LG’s mobile TV set, the WashTower is anything but an average home appliance. For starters, it’s actually a two-piece washer and dryer combo, made out of scratch-resistant steel, and utilizes a compact, ductless design, allowing it to save space and make maintaining the appliance easier. Of course, the main attraction is its AI Direct Drive technology, which learns its user’s laundry routine and tailors each cleaning session according to their preferences. The AI is also capable of sensing the laundry’s load size, the type and thickness of fabric in it, as well as how dirty the clothes are, and automatically adjusts its wash cycle, including the amount of detergent to be used.

As for its dryer side, LG claims it uses less power than conventional dryers, and utilizes infrared sensors that measure the laundry’s temperature to ensure every clothing piece is evenly dried. Both the washer and dryer communicate with each other to determine the cleaning setup that produces optimal results so that the user doesn’t have to do the thinking themselves. Now that’s a lot of tech for something that does nothing else but clean and dry clothes. Given LG’s track record for coming up with products as bizarre as its guilt-tripping fridge, this intelligent washing machine certainly won’t be the last of its kind, either.
