Lessons In Chemistry Season 2: Will It Happen? Everything We Know

Lessons In Chemistry Season 2: Will It Happen? Everything We Know

Apple TV+’s Lessons in Chemistry wrapped up its first season neatly, but will there ever be a season 2 of the popular period drama? Released in October 2023 and starring Brie Larson, Lessons in Chemistry adapts Bonnie Garmus’ novel that tells the story of chemist Elizabeth Zott who, in the 1950s, finds herself the host of a cooking program where she is able to use her scientific knowledge to connect with America’s housewives. Noted for its analysis of 1950s culture, the show touches on issues of race, class, and gender while also telling a compelling character narrative.

From the outset, Lessons in Chemistry was a critical darling, and the series joins the ranks of the host of other great original TV shows on Apple TV+. Despite its popularity, Lessons in Chemistry has always been billed as a miniseries, and the first season adapted the entirety of Garmus’ book. Larson in particular has garnered high praise for her turn as the stoic but fascinating Zott, and viewers have been asking about a second season even before the first concluded. The ending of the series may have wrapped things up, but it certainly left the door open for Lessons in Chemistry season 2.

Lessons In Chemistry Season 2 Is Not Confirmed

Naturally, since the series only recently concluded, Lessons in Chemistry season 2 has not been confirmed by Apple TV+ or anyone else involved with the production. Apple typically doesn’t wait too long to give its biggest productions the green light, but Lessons in Chemistry season 2 has far more hurdles to get over than the usual TV series. Considering the fact that the first season was a direct adaptation of the novel, a season 2 would have to be whipped up from scratch, which could take a lot more time.

What Lessons In Chemistry’s Cast & Crew Have Said About Season 2

Due to the recently resolved SAG/AFTRA strike, the majority of the cast of Lessons in Chemistry has been prevented from speaking about the show or doing any sort of promotion. Stars like Brie Larson haven’t offered their two cents on season 2, but showrunner Lee Eisenberg has been candid about the future. Speaking to Today, Eisenberg said “if we have the right story, we’d love to explore it“. Eisenberg offered an answer that is positive but not particularly committed either way.

Apple TV+ is adapting the hit novel Lessons in Chemistry into a miniseries by the same name with a cast led by Brie Larson as the zany Elizabeth Zott.

In the build-up to the series, producer Sarah Adina Smith emphasized the finality of the story, which doesn’t seem to bode well for Lessons in Chemistry season 2. Smith added, “We knew where we were going and we knew we had this one shot at it, that it wasn’t infinite“. This suggests that Smith and others are satisfied with the series remaining a miniseries, but the future will likely depend on the demand. HBO revived Big Little Lies for a second season, even though it was initially a miniseries that exhausted its original source material.

What Lessons In Chemistry Season 2’s Story Could Be

Aja Naomi King As Harriet Sloane In The Lessons In Chemistry Finale Episode 8.jpg

The ending of Lessons in Chemistry season 1 was quite final and offered closure to every major plot point. However, since it didn’t kill off any characters or change history, season 2’s story is still open. Elizabeth’s return to the world of “legitimate science” is surely not going to be a smooth one, and she could still face the sexism of the day while Harriet could continue to fight for civil rights even after her defeat over the freeway. Also, Mad could see her own challenges in Lessons in Chemistry season 2 as she grows into a young woman in an era of rampant sexism.
