Lenovo Wants To Take On The Kindle Scribe

Lenovo Wants To Take On The Kindle Scribe

Lenovo has a new tablet coming soon called the YOGA Paper, and it will go up against Amazon’s Kindle Scribe. While Amazon has been making Kindles for years, the Scribe is its first e-reader that comes with stylus support, allowing users to make notes and sketches on the e-ink display. The addition of a stylus comes at a price though, with the Scribe significantly more expensive than the Kindle Oasis with a $339 starting price.

Lenovo may be new to the e-reader market, but is well known for its tablets. They cut across different price categories and run various operating systems including Android, ChromeOS, and Windows. Lenovo also manufactures and sells tablets under the Motorola brand name. However, unlike the Lenovo-branded models which are sold with different operating systems, the Motorola-branded tablets only ship with Android. Motorola tablets are also not sold in the United States.

Unlike Lenovo’s previous tablets which have LCD and OLED screens, the YOGA Paper will have an e-ink display. Lenovo describes the YOGA Paper as a “thin and exquisite” tablet that’s comfortable to hold. That description is fitting as the tablet is just 5.5mm thick. Lenovo also claims that the display feels like “real paper”, and that the device isn’t only designed for reading but also to write down ideas (and draw), thanks to support for a pressure-sensitive stylus.

The Kindle Scribe Has A New Rival

Lenovo’s YOGA Paper will have a 10.3-inch display, and while its resolution and refresh rate are unknown, it appears to have front-lit LEDs and an adjustable color temperature. It will be housed in a metal body with slim bezels on three sides and a thicker fourth bezel that should make holding the tablet easy. This side also has a groove with magnets for holding the stylus. The low-latency stylus supports 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity and does not require pairing or charging.

Based on the official press renders, it appears the stylus will be included with the tablet and won’t be a separate purchase like the stylus of the Motorola Edge+. At the moment, there is no information on the battery life, storage capacity, and support for Android apps like the Huawei MatePad Paper. Lenovo has also not revealed any details about the YOGA Paper’s launch date, price, and availability outside China. Given that the global e-reader market is still dominated by Amazon, Lenovo might choose to keep the YOGA Paper as a China-exclusive, at least initially.
