A PlayStation 5 remake of The Last of Us has apparently been leaked by PlayStation Direct ahead of Summer Game Fest 2022. Naughty Dog’s beloved post-apocalyptic adventure, which originally launched in 2013 on PlayStation 3, sees the iconic duo of Joel and Ellie struggle to survive after a fungal infection ravages the world. A 2022 remake of The Last of Us has been heavily rumored for some time, and now the project has seemingly been fully leaked.
The somber and heartwarming story of The Last of Us captured the hearts and minds of gamers upon release. Players primarily take control of Joel, a survivor hardened by the death of his young daughter Sarah at the beginning of the apocalypse. When a young survivor named Ellie is discovered to be immune to the fungal infection, Joel must journey with her across the United States to deliver her to a group called the Fireflies. The Last of Us was highly praised for its emotional story and survivalist gameplay, which led to a 2020 sequel called The Last of Us: Part 2. Naughty Dog seemingly confirmed a remake of the first game earlier this year, which will update the 2013 title’s gameplay and graphics.
A PlayStation Direct leak (via ResetEra) seems to confirm an unannounced Last of Us remake for PlayStation 5. Set to release on September 2, the updated version of the game will be titled The Last of Us: Part 1 to match the naming scheme of its sequel. The project is said to be a “total overhaul” of the original experience that will include modernized gameplay, improved controls, expanded accessibility options and enhanced effects. The Last of Us: Part 1 Firefly Edition will also include bonuses like a SteelBook display case, in-game items and the Last of Us: American Dreams comic miniseries. The Last of Us: Part 1 is apparently in development for PC, too.
While an upgraded version of The Last of Us is no doubt exciting to fans, the rumors of a Last of Us remake including Factions mode seem to be debunked. The original version of the grounded first-person shooter included a multiplayer component called Factions, which let players compete in various multiplayer game modes. By combining online gameplay with The Last of Us’ focus on survival and resource management, Factions managed to be a popular addition to the game. The Last of Us: Part 2 sadly launched without its own multiplayer mode, and some fans falsely believed an updated Factions mode would launch with a Last of Us PS5 remake.
Due to its tense survival gameplay and heartfelt story, The Last of Us is considered one of the greatest video games of all time. Naughty Dog made many gameplay and graphical improvements in The Last of Us: Part 2, and the upcoming Last of Us remake can take TLOU2 features to breathe new life into the original title. If the leak is to be believed, The Last of Us: Part 1 will take Joel and Ellie on a final cross-country adventure on September 2.
