Lady Bird 2: Greta Gerwig’s Biggest Collaborator Is Open To Return For Sequel

Saoirse Ronan, the star of Lady Bird, would love to work with acclaimed director Greta Gerwig (Barbie) again. Distributed by A24 and Universal Pictures, the movie was an instant success among critics and drew extreme love from audiences as well. With just a $10 million budget, it tells the story of a teenage girl struggling to find a way to escape her small-town life by applying for college in New York City. The movie made $79 million at the box office, smashing expectations.

After Gerwig’s unprecedented success with Barbie, hope for Barbie 2 has been rising. Yet Gerwig has expressed considerably more interest in developing Lady Bird 2 than a sequel to her $1.4 billion movie. At the Sundance Film Festival, Screen Rant spoke with Ronan about a potential sequel, and she expressed an unquestionable interest in reuniting with Gerwig for a sequel. Check out her quote below:

Did she say that? Did she actually say that? Maybe we should do that. I feel like actually we have always talked about that. Yeah of course I would. I would do everything with her till the end of time.

Will Lady Bird 2 Ever Happen?

While Gerwig and Ronan are both interested in a follow-up to Lady Bird, the possibility remains somewhat unlikely. Considering that the movie is a coming-of-age story, having to develop a sequel means having to follow the titular character through another stage of her life. That can somewhat defeat the purpose of a coming-of-age high school story. A spiritual successor set with another protagonist would be more suitable in that sense, but would realistically not include Ronan starring.

Another issue is that Gerwig never does sequels. When asked about Barbie 2, Gerwig expressed that she is rarely capable of developing creative ideas for follow-up movies. Outside of a few comments, she has never really shown serious interest in working on sequel movies, despite the success of her existing work, Little Women and Barbie. Based on her existing filmography, she prefers to work on fresh and original ideas.

Emma Watson as Meg, Saoirse Ronan as Jo, Florence Pugh as Amy, and Eliza Scanlen as Beth in Little Women, and Margot Robbie as Barbie in Barbie.

Barbie will undoubtedly be nominated for multiple Oscars at the upcoming awards show, including one that will rectify a previous Greta Gerwig snub.

Gerwig is also incredibly busy. She is currently working on directing and writing two Chronicles of Narnia movies for Netflix, and she is credited as a writer for Disney’s Snow White remake. With other commitments filling Gerwig’s time, a Lady Bird sequel is not likely to be a priority. Still, sometime in the future, Gerwig could very well return to the sleeper hit of a franchise, if she can come up with an idea.
