Kung Fu Panda 4 Nears Global Box Office Milestone And Passes Kung Fu Panda 3 Domestically

Kung Fu Panda 4 approaches a major box office milestone while beating the record of another film in the franchise. The fourth installment in Po’s big-screen journey, Kung Fu Panda 4 opened last month on March 8. The animated movie features an all-star voice cast including Jack Black, Viola Davis, Ke Huy Quan, Awkwafina, James Hong, Bryan Cranston, Dustin Hoffman, and Ian McShane. Kung Fu Panda 4 has received mixed reviews thus far during the first month of its theatrical run.

As per Collider, Kung Fu Panda has shown its box office staying power as it approaches a major global box office milestone. At the time of writing, Kung Fu Panda 4 has now grossed $347 million worldwide, and is expected to soar past the milestone of $350 million in the coming days. As it encroaches upon this checkpoint, Kung Fu Panda 4 has also passed previous franchise entry Kung Fu Panda 3 at the domestic box office. Kung Fu Panda 4 has now grossed $151 million domestically compared to Kung Fu Panda 3’s $143 million domestic run.

Kung Fu Panda 4’s Box Office Journey Explained

Despite its mixed reviews, Kung Fu Panda 4 has offered a solid performance at the box office thus far. During its first weekend, Kung Fu Panda 4 debuted at no. 1 at the box office. This feat was particularly impressive given that it was competing against Dune: Part Two, which is a crowd-pleasing, high-profile sci-fi sequel that has currently grossed over $626 million worldwide. Kung Fu Panda 4 has also managed to approach new box office milestones even as the March box office competition heats up with movies such as Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and Godzilla x Kong.

Kung Fu Panda 4’s Rotten Tomatoes Scores Are A Divisive Franchise First

Kung Fu Panda 4 has set franchise records with its Rotten Tomatoes scores, which also means it has a divisive franchise first for the popular movies.

That said, Kung Fu Panda 4 is still the lowest-grossing installment of the Kung Fu Panda franchise thus far in terms of the global box office. Kung Fu Panda grossed $632 million, its successor Kung Fu Panda 2 grossed a slightly higher $665 million, and Kung Fu Panda 3 grossed $521 million. While Kung Fu Panda 4 is still in theaters and thus has time to surpass another Kung Fu Panda film, it seems unlikely to do so as it would need nearly $200 million more to pass Kung Fu Panda 3.

Kung Fu Panda 4’s gross dropoff is not a great sign of the film beating Kung Fu Panda 3. The fourth installment saw a 50.2% dropoff during week 2 of its release and a 35.4% dropoff for week 3. If it continues trending downward, bringing in enough to pass Kung Fu Panda 3 seems unlikely. Either way, Kung Fu Panda 4 can be proud of how far it has come at the domestic and global box offices so far.
