Kristen Stewart’s M Sci-Fi Horror Flop Becomes A Netflix Hit

Underwater has become a global Netflix hit three years after flopping in theaters. The movie, which premiered in early 2020, features Kristen Stewart leading an ensemble that includes Vincent Cassel, Jessica Henwick, John Gallagher Jr., Mamoudou Athie, and T.J. Miller as the crew of the underwater research facility Kepler 822, which begins to collapse due to interference from a mysterious entity. The movie, which had an estimated production budget somewhere between $50 and $80 million, only made $40.9 million worldwide.

Netflix has now calculated their global Top 10 English-language movies for the week of December 11 through December 17. The monster movie Underwater landed at No. 6 on the chart, thanks to 5.8 million viewers accumulating a total of 9.2 million viewing hours. The only other movies higher on the chart are the 2023 smash hit The Super Mario Bros. Movie and four newly released Netflix originals including Leo and Family Switch.
