For the first time in five years, The Powerpuff Girls are returning, this time in comic book form. The original show ran from 1998 until 2005 on Cartoon Network. Since then, there have been specials, a failed live-action pilot, and a 2016-2019 animated revival using the Powerpuff Girls name. It’s been a struggle trying to revive the franchise, including a 2022 announcement for a second animated reboot for the Powerpuff Girls, with no significant updates since — until now.
Now, just in time for the show’s 25th anniversary, Dynamite Comics and Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products are bringing back The Powerpuff Girls, courtesy of an acclaimed creative team led by writer Kelly Thompson and artist Paulina Ganucheau. The Powerpuff Girls #1 is currently slated for release in July 2024.

Their awesome powers and teamwork tirelessly defend their idyllic city from the likes of petty criminals, marauding monsters, and diabolical super-villains alike. |

The Powerpuff Girls Return in Comic-Book Form
The New Series Is Scheduled to Be Released in July 2024
It was announced at New York Comic Con last year that Dynamite Comics had plans to revive several classic Warner Bros. cartoons for the page, among them ThunderCats, Space Ghost, and more. Now, The Powerpuff Girls #1 is ready to ship to comic shops worldwide from the pen of Thompson, who’s always been a fan of the franchise: “So much so that when I was young — just out of art school — I even wrote a few short stories and began to storyboard them in hopes I could get a job on the show! So this just feels… exactly right.”
Clearly, the Birds of Prey writer is an avid Powerpuff Girls fanatic and is ready to showcase that love through these new stories. The most nostalgic of fans can expect to connect with the series on that basis alone – a shared admiration for a body of work they all grew up loving. Artist Paulina Ganucheau also admits to being “obsessed with them” growing up, to the point she had her own Powerpuff Girls “OC“, oekaki board, and frequently called into Cartoon Network’s merch giveaways for the show.
A Powerpuff Girls Comic for Powerpuff Girls Fans – by Powerpuff Girls Fans
Made with Sugar, Spice, and Everything Nice
This isn’t the first time the Powerpuff Girls have been part of the world of comic books — DC Comics ran its own Powerpuff Girl series under its Johnny DC imprint from 2000 until 2006 — but it is perhaps the first time it’s been crafted by creators who grew up watching the show. There are numerous people on board who not only want to continue the show’s lore faithfully but want to do justice by it out of pure love. That love should be able to shine through the material in a way that new and old Powerpuff Girls fans will appreciate.
The Powerpuff Girls #1 is expected to hit stores in July 2024 from Dynamite Comics.
Powerpuff Girls
The Powerpuff Girls is an animated comedy series that chronicles the adventures of three super-powered little girls created by a professor in an accidental lab experiment. Setting out to make his own little girl, Professor Utonium’s experiment goes awry and creates Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, each with unique powers. The three girls are then asked by the mayor and other citizens to help protect the city, all while attending kindergarten and trying to live an everyday life.
