Knives Out: 8 Hidden Details Found By Reddit

After the success of the massive success of the first movie, the announcement of Rian Johnson’s newest film, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, has been met with great anticipation. With Daniel Craig set to reprise his role as the iconic detective, Benoit Blanc, everyone is wondering what amazing plots and twists this next adventure will have in store (and if Blanc’s investigative skills have improved too).

There are also quite a few fans, especially on Reddit, who are excited to see what intricate details or references can be found throughout the movie (especially since the first one was littered with hidden details that changed how they saw the movie). It’s definitely worth keeping a lookout for them in the future because they could also end up relating back to the first film.

The Significance Of Detective Blanc Pressing The Piano Keys

Detective Blanc’s character is very clever and uses out-of-the-ordinary techniques to get to the bottom of things. At times, his actions seem bizarre and add comedy to the film. Often though, they are brilliant tactics that aid the investigation.

When Blanc and the officers investigate the Thrombeys, one Redditor u/ronitpanwar26, pointed out, “Every time Benoit Blanc hits the piano key, it’s a cue to ask the time they arrived at the party.” Given that Blanc had only just arrived at their house, it’s quite fascinating to see that his presence has already begun to affect the Thrombeys as he looks like he is throwing them off. It’s also interesting to see how quickly Detective Lieutenant Elliot clicks onto what he is doing, foreshadowing how great this partnership will become.

The Detail About Trooper Wagner Being Harlan’s Fan Wasn’t Random

Knives Out: Ransom lunges at Marta with a knife

Prior to his untimely death, Harlan was a mystery novelist and in a strange coincidence, Detective Trooper Wagner (Noah Segan) was a big fan of the author. Initially, it seems like it’s just a random fact that won’t have any significance other than to add depth to a character. However, the viewer would be able to see that it did play a factor in the movie as, near the end, when Ransom attacks Marta with a knife, the audience can witness a glimpse of Wagner’s admiration.

As u/Melospiza discovered, “[Wagner] knows the knife is a fake and is probably thrilled to witness a murder attempt using the circle of knives in the author’s house. This isn’t the first time where he lets his fanboyism get the better of his professionalism.” It was quite risky to not let the other detectives in on this bit of information, but, this could have potentially led to Ransom finding another weapon to attack Marta and succeeding in killing her. Luckily, his hunch paid off

The Significance Of The Proton Mail

Knives Out is praised not only for its attention to detail but also for the accuracy of these details. A prime example of this is seen later in the film when Marta reads an email sent from an unknown source.

According to Redditor, u/PandaKing185, “the ransom email is sent using Proton Mail, a real secure and encrypted emailing service that is untraceable.” Given the identity of the real culprit was, it’s not surprising that he ensured that the email could not be traced back to him. Considering that he loved his grandfather so much, concealing his identity proves that he had planned everything down to the last detail, proving how calculating and heartless he really was.

The Significance Of The Game “Go”

Although Knives Out uses some common murder mystery film tropes, it has some unique plot points. One example is the strategy game, “Go” which, much like Chess, is a test of wits. In the film, Harlan often plays the game with Marta and Ransom separately, which could give insight into how their minds work and foreshadow future events.

In a scene where Marta and Ransom meet user, u/cptmrvl, noticed, “the beer bottles on the table form the “atari” position” and “By acting as [Marta’s] savior…[Ransom’s] deliberately letting her off the hook from a position of atari which in and of itself is a suspicious move coming from an “expert” Go player and foreshadows his malignance.”

How Ransom Was Revealed As Blanc’s Employer Early On

What made Knives Out one of the best movies of 2019, was its plot twist. It turns out that Ransom was involved in Harlan’s death and was even the one to hire Benoit Blanc for further investigation after learning his grandfather’s case was labeled a suicide.

This was foreshadowed in the scene where Ransom reads the blackmail letter sent to Marta. According to the user, u/JustBronzeThingsLol, “On the table in front of him, you can see several copies of The New Yorker, mentioned earlier by his mother and Aunt (?) as having an article about Blanc.” It is a meaningful clue since Ransom wanted Blanc to find the planted evidence and convict Marta as the killer.

The Person Responsible For The Muddy Footprint Is Hinted At Early On

One of the film’s engaging aspects is how it makes the audience feel like they are solving the case along with the characters. A good example of this can be seen during a flashback when Marta climbs into the mansion through the window.

As Redditor, u/darkmat11, spotted, “there is mud on the windowsill… but during the flashback, the protagonist [Marta], doesn’t put their feet there… later in the film we see who also went there, we can see [Ransom] put his feet there.” This storytelling technique is used for many pieces of evidence.

“Arc Of A Projectile”

Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc in Knives Out

In Knives Out, what the characters say is just as important as what the audience sees. Detective Blanc is a prime example of this. He has many quotes throughout the film that hint at how he feels about the case. What he says usually comes full circle in one way or another.

For example, user, u/B4DataLore, explains that at one point, “Blanc describes his method as being the “arc of a projectile” and notes that “Earlier in the film, Blanc walks straight up to where the baseball landed after being thrown out the window, despite never seeing it be thrown.” Blanc’s wit and excellent detective skills make his return in Green Onion, a highly anticipated Netflix original movie, even more exciting.

The Significance Of The Missing Jug

There are a lot of scenes that foreshadow the culprit throughout the film. One of these moments occurs when Marta gets shaken by a blackmail letter with Harlan’s toxicology reports and decides to show it to her supposed ally, Ransom.

In this scene, Redditor, u/OliverTate2, points out something in the background: “There is a jug missing here…because Ransom used it to burn down the medical examiner’s office.” It is an important detail and an early indicator of Ransom’s guilt since burning the examiner’s office would destroy crucial evidence.
