Knives Out 3 Wishlist: 6 Things We Want To See In The Sequel

Knives Out 3 Wishlist: 6 Things We Want To See In The Sequel

With Knives Out 3 confirmed, it’s worth considering just what the threequel needs to include to match the same standard as the first two Knives Out movies. While details about Knives Out 3 are still scarce, it doesn’t mean that certain elements can’t be theorized about or hoped for. What is known, however, is that Daniel Craig’s Detective, Benoit Blanc, is gearing up to solve whatever mystery may come his way.

Knives Out 3 will almost certainly follow a whodunnit storyline, much like Knives Out and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery did. However, the ins and outs of where, when, and how Knives Out 3 happens are still to be determined. Director and writer Rian Johnson has a great opportunity to not only integrate brilliant new plot twists with Knives Out 3 but also fill in some gaps missing from the first two films.

6 Knives Out 3 Should See More Hugh Grant

Who Exactly Is The Man Living With Benoit Blanc?

One surprisingly fun appearance in Glass Onion came from Hugh Grant, who was credited with the character name Phillip. Initially, it wasn’t clear exactly who Phillip was, but he clearly lived with Blanc. It was then later revealed by director Rian Johnson, while explaining the story behind Hugh Grant’s cameo in Glass Onion, that Phillip was the detective’s partner. Little backstory has been given on the relationship between Phillip and Benoit blank, so it’s hoped that Knives Out 3 will delve into it further, and show the pair together again.

The Knives Out franchise has seen primarily American casts for its two films, so it was refreshing to see another British actor opposite Daniel Craig. It’s not exactly clear as to where the two reside. However, if Knives Out 3 were to see more of Grant’s character, it could allow for other areas of the franchise to be expanded. The next film could not only see more details about Blanc’s backstory through Grant’s involvement but could also open up to a variety of new locations.

5 More Benoit Blanc Backstory

Daniel Craig’s Detective Needs To Be Explored More

Benoit Blanc has no doubt become one of Daniel Craig’s most memorable roles. While it’s great to see the British actor in a less serious role and demonstrate a rather interesting corn-fried Southern accent, there’s still a lot to be learned about the character of Detective Blanc. Knives Out 3 has the opportunity to develop his backstory more, and will be able to provide more details about his past, how he became a detective, and just how he has a nose for sleuthing out crime.

The first Knives Out film showed the protagonist as a plot device more than anything else, with little of the character having been revealed, a throwback to certain noir detectives of old. Although it wasn’t a necessity for the film, a lead character’s backstory is always intriguing and helps push the story forward. While Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery did show Blanc in his home, and gave some context to his personal life, there are still plenty of gaps that Knives Out 3 has the chance to fill.

4 Knives Out 3 Needs A New Location

The Knives Out Franchise Has Seen Blanc Travel The World

Detective Blanc and Andi (Helen) stood on a beach in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

The first two films saw Blanc travel away from home, so it would only make sense for Knives Out 3 to see the detective arrive somewhere new. While Knives Out was set in Massachusetts, Glass Onion was set on a private island in Greece, ticking off two out of seven continents. For the sake of contrast, Knives Out 3 could send Blanc to a colder climate, which could be very interesting for its plot.

Although there’s still been no confirmation as to where it’ll be set, there’s reason to believe that Knives Out 3 could be set in Utah. In a promotional video posted to X in January 2023, Rian Johnson used a globe to let fate decide where the next installment would be set, with his finger landing on Utah. Of course, he was very likely joking. Still, while nothing has been made definite, Johnson has expressed interest in Knives Out 3 being once again set in America (via Business Insider), so Blanc arriving in Utah is a possibility.

3 The Return Of Marta

The Heir To The Thrombey Fortune Needs An Update

Ana de Armas stole the show with her performance as Marta Cabrera in Knives Out, giving a beautiful portrayal of the strong-willed, ethical nurse. Not only was she a fascinating character in general, but she was also of great assistance to Blanc throughout the film. While Marta didn’t appear in Glass Onion, there are still questions surrounding her fate after the events of Knives Out.

The ending of Knives Out saw Marta’s innocence proved, as well as her becoming the heir of Harlan Thrombey’s (Christopher Plummer) fortune. Its final moments left Marta considering whether to return the inheritance to Thrombey’s family or not, but her future was left ambiguous. Knives Out 3 would be a good chance to wrap Marta’s story up properly, either confirming that she’d kept the fortune she was deservedly given, happily living her life with the bad memories of the Thrombey family’s actions fading from her mind, or even returning to officially become Blanc’s right-hand woman.

2 Answers About Helen’s Fate

The Grief-Stricken Sister Destroyed The Mona Lisa

The biggest plot twist in Glass Onion came from Janelle Monáe’s character, upon the reveal that Andi’s twin Helen had been pretending to be her sister the entire time, with a majority of the group unaware that Andi had died. The film’s climax saw Helen embark on an angry, justice-filled rampage as revenge for how Andi had been treated by her ex-business partner Miles (Edward Norton), which led to her suicide. Helen ends up throwing shards of Klear, an alternative type of fuel that was ready to be launched by Miles’ company, into a bonfire.

The blaze then leads to the destruction of Miles’ mansion, but more importantly, the Mona Lisa, which was on loan from the Louvre. Despite Helen and the group deciding to let the painting burn to prove how dangerous Klear is and to destroy Miles’ life, it’s unknown whether Helen actually got away with it or not. Not only would it be great to see Monáe return for Knives Out 3 for the sake of a celebrity cameo, but it’d be an opportunity for the Knives Out franchise to see Helen get justice for her sister’s death.

1 The Revenge Of Ransom And Miles

The Villains From The First Two Films Could Come Back To Haunt Blanc

Chirs Evans as Ransom and Edward Norton as Miles in the Knives Out franchise

With each Knives Out film has come the reveal of a villain. Knives Out introduced Chris Evans as Ransom, who had tricked Marta into believing she’d given Harlan the wrong medication. In Glass Onion, it was revealed to be Miles (Edward Norton) who had staged Andi’s suicide. By the end of their respective films, both men were faced with criminal charges and had been caught by Blanc, so it would make sense for them to be hell-bent on revenge, whether that be from inside or outside of prison.

Both of their lives had been completely ruined, with Ransom losing his inheritance and Miles losing his company and reputation. However, they both came from money, so it wouldn’t be impossible for them to somehow avoid their sentences. With Knives Out 3 being the last planned installment of the franchise, at this time, it could be an interesting way to wrap up the series by having the two villains meet and work together to take down Blanc, the common link in both of their incarcerations.
