Knives Out 2 Filming Is Almost Complete Says Rian Johnson

Rian Johnson took to Instagram to update fans on Knives Out 2, suggesting that filming is coming to a close. The first Knives Out came out in 2019, Johnson’s follow-up to his divisive Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Knives Out was a runaway hit, earning critical acclaim and over $300 million in the worldwide box office. Daniel Craig starred as Benoit Blanc, a southern detective investigating the death of renowned mystery writer Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) while contending with the author’s dysfunctional family. The impressive cast also included Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Toni Collette, Ana de Armas, and Chris Evans.

Following the immense success of Knives Out, Netflix secured a landmark deal to the rights for Knives Out 2 and 3 for an estimated $450 million. Since the announcement in March, Johnson has swiftly proceeded with the sequel, culling together yet another all-star cast for Knives Out 2. For the next whodunnit, Craig is reprising his role as Benoit Blanc. He will be joined by Dave Bautista, Edward Norton, Leslie Odom, Jr., Kathryn Hahn, Ethan Hawke, Kate Hudson, and others. While no plot info has been released yet, audiences can look forward to another quirky caper penned by Johnson.

Now, Johnson has confirmed that the Knives Out 2 production is chugging along, with filming about to come to a close. Johnson posted a photo of the set on his Instagram account. The image shows the film set, cast in black and white, with the Empire State Building in the background. The caption reads, somewhat cryptically, “Final few days…” Check out Johnson’s post below:

Johnson’s update confirms the sequel’s efficient schedule. Shooting for Knives Out 2 began in June in Greece. On July 30th, Johnson tweeted that filming was officially halfway through, and that the cast and crew had wrapped its Greece-set shooting. At the end of August, star Madelyn Cline provided more shooting updates, describing her experience working with the talented ensemble cast as both terrifying and incredible.

The new image from the set not only announces that filming is winding down, but also indicates that at least some of the movie will be set in New York City, as the midtown skyline dominates the background. The original film took place in Massachusetts, with much of the action taking place in an ornate New England mansion. With a Mediterranean setting already confirmed, Johnson’s Instagram post will only stoke more theories as to where the sequel takes place. Although Knives Out 2 does not yet have an official release date, it is expected to hit Netflix sometime in 2022.
