King in Black: The Galaxy’s Best Weapon Is An MCU Hero

Warning! Spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy #10 below!

The King in Black has successfully enveloped the Earth in darkness, leaving its heroes scrambling in how to defeat the God of Symbiotes. Planets across the galaxy are in a similar position, as they’ve been shown to be largely defenseless against Knull’s army of symbiote dragons. But, one Guardians of the Galaxy hero just proved he’s super effective against the villain’s forces thanks to a recent power-up.

Peter Quill’s Star-Lord has been through a lot in recent issues. After seemingly dying after sacrificing himself to stop the Gods of Olympus Guardians of the Galaxy #2, it was recently revealed that Quill didn’t die – but that his Element Gun absorbed the energy of the blast and sent him to a new dimension altogether. There, Star-Lord is stuck for more than 150-years, where he enters a romantic with two inhabitants – while learning about his new powers derived from his gun. As Knull overtakes Spartax, Quill returns and showcases how he might be key in stopping the death-hungry bad guy.

In Guardians of the Galaxy #10 by Al Ewing, Jaunn Cabal, Federico Blee, and VC’s Cory Petit, Knull’s forces have killed billions on Spartax as the remaining Guardians tries to evacuate the planet. Star-Lord re-emerges and as a symbiote dragon is about to attack him, he summons the Universal Radiant Energy and sends a massive energy blast as it, as he becomes a literal Star-Lord.

Peter explains to his shocked former teammates that he’s been gone for over a century, where he learned about his control of the elements, and how his gun is a prism that he can focus himself through, as he puts it, “like the sun.” As the group flies away from Spartax, they encounter the same symbiote dragon and get stuck in its grasp. As Knull threatens to “tear the sun from your sky,” Quill says he’s “the Master of the Sun” as he destroys the dragon with his gun. Moondragon reveals the symbiote residue left over is inert as the rest of the Guardians are stunned to see Peter’s true power.

Considering how he showed he could defeat the symbiote dragons (with ease), Star-Lord seems like the perfect answer to the King in BlackHowever, with the evil Gods of Olympus and Knull’s army on his tail, Peter says he can’t help on Earth as he would “only make everything worse.” While he’s not wrong, it’s hard to imagine Earth’s situation getting any worse as Knull has a stronghold on the planet and its heroes. Still, with his massive powers, Star-Lord might be exactly what is needed to stop the King in Black for good. Guardians of the Galaxy #10 is in stores and available online now.
