Kevin Smith Teases A Mystery Project In 2021

Filmmaker Kevin Smith has just teased a new mystery project for 2021. The director has amassed a significant cult following since his 1994 debut with the low-budget Clerks. He’s also been incredibly prolific over the past several years, most recently releasing his follow up to Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.

In addition to the work that Smith has already released, there’s plenty more on its way. During this year’s Comic-Con@Home, Smith gave fans a brief glimpse at his upcoming horror film, Killroy Was Here. Known to dabble in a variety of genres throughout his career, the backlog of projects the 50-year-old filmmaker currently has is extensive as well. Perhaps one of the most anticipated films that Smith is getting together is the third film in his Clerks franchise. That film has had a somewhat rocky road to production, with Smith at one point declaring that it wasn’t going to happen at all. However, as is often the case in Hollywood, no project is ever truly dead – it merely needs the right timing and a bit of luck. Smith also plans to delve deeper into TV, with crime series Sam and Twitch, which includes characters spun off from the popular Spawn comic books, reportedly in the works.

As 2020 moves into its final few months, Smith took to his official Twitter account to lament the gloomy year we’ve all experienced and to give hope that 2021 will have more laughs in it. The twenty-seven-second video (which can be seen in full below) shows a masked Smith walk into what looks to be empty office space and say, “I think this is the place.” Also included in the Tweet is the written message from Smith, “The year 2020 hasn’t been funny. So in 2021, we’re gonna make fun!”

Just what the filmmaker has up his sleeve is anyone’s guess, and the internet will likely be rife with speculation for the weeks and months to come. One reasonable guess is that Smith is going to finally begin production on Clerks III. The office space in the video could easily be transformed into a shop or fast food eatery. However, given that fans were already well aware that a third Clerks film is on its way, it’s far more fun to consider that maybe something entirely new and unexpected is about to be announced. Exactly when that announcement arrives is anyone’s guess, however.

Whatever it is Smith does end up announcing that he’s already making plans to make 2021 better for fans than 2020 is something to admire. The arrival of COVID has undoubtedly made people’s lives difficult worldwide. Although laughter isn’t a cure for the pandemic, it is welcome when it comes to someone as fun-loving as Kevin Smith.
