Kevin Smith Hypes Tony Todd’s Unsettling Masters of the Universe Performance

Showrunner Kevin Smith calls horror legend Tony Todd’s performance in Netflix’s Masters of the Universe: Revelation commanding and unsettling. The show will be an anime-style sequel to the hit 1980s children’s show, which spawned the much-mocked movie spin-off starring Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella. Smith was announced as the showrunner at Power-Con last year.

Smith has said that rather than being a reboot, the series will be a sequel that ties up a number of storylines from the original series. The movie director, comic book writer, and serial podcaster has gathered together a stellar voice cast for Masters of the Universe: Revelations, including Mark Hamill (Skeletor), Lena Headey (Evil-Lyn), Sarah Michelle Gellar (Teela), Stephen Root (Cringer/Battle-Cat) and Chris Wood (He-Man). Smith had previously announced that most of the voice cast had finished recording their lines, and that he’s incredibly excited for fans to hear what they’ve done with the scripts.

Now, Smith has heaped praise on another voice actor, responding to a tweet from horror legend and Candyman himself, Tony Todd, thanking Smith for casting him as Scare Glow in the show. Smith responded by saying that Todd has given a performance that is both “unsettling” and “commanding” and reiterating that he can’t wait for audiences to see the new episodes. You can see the tweet below.

The character of Scare Glow appeared briefly in the animated show in the 1980s and was one of the last toys released in the toyline that inspired the show. He did not appear in the movie. The character is one of Skeletor’s evil minions, who appears as a ghost-skeleton hybrid with glowing bones and a large scythe. Todd is known not only for his terrifying performance as Candyman but also for his deep voice, which is perfect for the role of Scare Glow.

Smith seems to have got his casting for the Masters of the Universe: Revelation just right. Hamill is the best choice to play Skeletor, and Headey’s sneering turn as Cersei Lannister proved she has what it takes to play an over-the-top villain. Todd will be a great addition to the show, which Smith has called the Game of Thrones version of He-Man. Given his incredibly rich, deep voice, it’s no surprise that Smith has called his performance unsettling.

The first time Todd’s voice is heard in Candyman, it makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up, and he’s sure to pull off the role of Skeletor’s evil henchman with relish and terror. Smith will naturally be effusive about the performances of his cast, but the proof of whether he has actually been able to make a show that lives up to people’s expectations will be seen when Masters of the Universe: Revelations is released on Netflix next year.
