Kenobi Better Explains 2 Major Obi-Wan Moments In A New Hope

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Two major Obi-Wan Kenobi moments from A New Hope are better explained in Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 4. Star Wars‘ Disney+ series sees Ewan McGregor’s titular Jedi Master continues his mission in episode 4 to bring back the kidnapped young Leia home. In Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 4, their adventure suffers a major setback as Reva (Moses Ingram) gets her hands on the Alderaan princess, sending Obi-Wan on a daring mission to infiltrate an Imperial base.

Lucasfilm took a long time to land on Obi-Wan Kenobi‘s story. The project was reworked a couple of times before it became what it is now. Contrary to initial assumptions that the series would delve deep into the Jedi Master’s relationship with young Luke Skywalker, the show pulls an unexpected plot twist and tackles the hidden history between Leia and Ben Kenobi. This provides a brand new perspective when revisiting the original Star Wars film. Aside from Obi-Wan’s ties to Leia, however, the Disney+ project also better explains some of Sir Alec Guinness’ most memorable moments in A New Hope.

In Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 4, the titular Jedi Master goes on a dangerous attempt to save young Leia from Reva, the Third Sister. His work is cut out for him given the security of the Imperial base; thankfully, he gets help from Tala (Indira Varma). For the most part, however, Obi-Wan is on the ground by himself, relying on his old skills to reach young Leia who was being interrogated by Reva. Throughout his whole ordeal, he makes several moves and decisions that provide new context to his actions in A New Hope. For starters, in the original Star Wars film, he was fairly confident that his Jedi mind trick against the Stormtroopers would work, allowing them passage as they seek out a way to leave Tatooine. He was sure that the scheme was going to work because he has done it before as seen in Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 4. Granted that he struggles to use the Force to fool the Stormtroopers looking for him, the fact that it works gives him the assurance that he could easily do it again in Star Wars.

Secondly, Obi-Wan sneaking around the Imperial base draws parallel to him navigating the Death Star in Star Wars. While the specifics are different and Obi-Wan was much older in A New Hope, his stint in trying to locate young Leia in Obi-Wan Kenobi may have familiarized him with how the Empire tends to design its headquarters. This makes him better equipped to roam around the Death Star on his own while Luke Skywalker and Han Solo scour the space station for the abducted Princess Leia. It’s worth noting that after Order 66, Obi-Wan mostly stayed hidden in Tatooine, opting to keep a low profile for his own survival while keeping an eye on Luke. This is the first time in his life that he sees firsthand what the Empire has built since the fall of the Republic and the Jedi. His experience in Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 4 makes him better equipped to dodge Stormtroopers and distract other Imperial officers 10 years later.

Given its prequel nature, Obi-Wan succeeding in saving Leia is already a given. Despite that, the show remains interesting given these seemingly inconsequential details that actually have a significant impact on Star Wars’ storytelling as a whole. With two more episodes left for Obi-Wan Kenobi, expect more small but important moments like these that can only make the Jedi Master’s overall story arc better.

Obi-Wan Kenobi airs new episodes Wednesdays on Disney+.
