Singer Kelly Clarkson isn’t quite ready for Lucifer to end, and took to social media in order to ask Netflix to renew the show for season 6. The Texas-born artist first rose to fame back in 2002, as the first-ever winner of American Idol. Securing a record contract, she went on to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart and had the best-selling single of that year. Clarkson has since gone on to produce eight studio albums, ultimately selling over 25 million combined copies and earning two Grammy awards. In recent years, she has branched out into television, serving as a coach on The Voice and as the host of her own self-titled variety program, The Kelly Clarkson Show.
Created by Neil Gaiman, Lucifer debuted in the 1989 comic book series The Sandman before being spun off into a solo series penned by Mike Carey. Developed by Tom Kapinos, the TV adaptation premiered on Fox in 2016, starring Tom Ellis in the titular role. Lucifer follows the fallen angel as he consults with the LAPD to solve crimes (and various personal supernatural threats). Despite initially high viewership, ratings declined steadily, and in 2018 Fox officially canceled Lucifer after three seasons. Netflix opted to save the show – commissioning a 10-part season 4 the following month. Following its release earlier in the year, Netflix announced that it had renewed Lucifer for a fifth and final season.
Kelly Clarkson is still holding out hope for Lucifer season 6, however. Taking to Instagram, the singer admitted that she was a latecomer to the series, citing her four children and many jobs as the reason for taking so long to “catch on to the show.” Having been recommended Lucifer repeatedly by her sister, Clarkson eventually found time to watch it – only to get hooked and end up bingeing the entire run in a matter of days. That accomplishment was apparently marred, though, by the news that the show would be ending with season 5. “I’m so mad,” she conveyed, before going on to request that the streaming service “do her a solid and re-up the show for season 6.“
Netflix increased Lucifer‘s episode count from 10 to 16 for the final season. Though the showrunners have praised Netflix for allowing them to conclude the show properly, it apparently won’t be enough for Clarkson. The post has already garnered over 80,000 likes and even received a personal thank-you message from Lucifer star Aimee Garcia, who proclaimed that the show of support had “made her year.” Clarkson specifically mentioned Garcia, who plays quirky forensic scientist Ella Lopez on the show. Revealing that they actually share a hairstylist, Clarkson declared that she wants Garcia – and the whole cast – to appear on her show.
As well as Ellis and Garcia, the series also stars Laura German, Kevin Alejandro, D.B. Woodside, Lesley-Ann Brandt, and Rachael Harris. Over the years, Lucifer has also boasted such notable guest-stars as Smallville‘s Tom Welling and Battlestar Galactica‘s Tricia Helfer. Whether or not anything can be done to change Netflix’s mind remains to be seen. Especially with Netflix confirmed to be adapting The Sandman, from which this version of The Devil originally spawned. Either way, the show’s passionate fanbase will no doubt join Clarkson in demanding more seasons to wrap up the show’s many loose threads and stave off having to say goodbye quite so soon.
Lucifer season 5 is expected to release in 2020 on Netflix.
