Kang Theory Explains How The MCU’s Big Bad Can Fix A Long-Time Avengers Complaint

Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are set to take on the Council of Kangs in the Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, and a theory about how the film may handle the climactic fight scene addresses an awkward issue with the MCU’s current roster of heroes. The Avengers was a small team in the early days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, composed only of Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Hulk (and, of course, backed by Nick Fury). However, the roster has grown with each Avengers movie, adding heroes like Vision and Scarlet Witch and eventually extending to include other teams like the Guardians of the Galaxy.

With each Avengers movie getting progressively bigger, it’s hard to imagine that Avengers: The Kang Dynasty will feature a small cast. While it’s exciting to see heroes from every corner of the Marvel universe unite to face a common threat, it also introduces some awkward problems as not every Marvel hero is equipped to face the same kinds of threats. Fortunately, Kang’s biggest strength also happens to be perfect for showcasing a wide range of Avengers without any seeming wasted or sidelined.

It’s Getting Harder To Justify The Avengers Being In The Same Fight

In the first Avengers movie, and to a lesser degree in Avengers: Age of Ultron, it made sense for every hero to be in the fight because there was simply a limited number of super-powered individuals available for the team. That being the case, it made sense for Thor and Hulk to be fighting alongside Black Widow and Hawkeye because the latter two are undeniably better than nothing, even if their effectiveness is comparatively limited. However, as the original Avengers roster grew and got more powerful overall, it became more challenging to justify every hero fighting side-by-side.

This came to a head in Avengers: Endgame‘s massive final battle. While it made sense for every available hero to fight against the time-displaced Thanos, it quickly became clear that the fight was really being carried by characters like Thor, Captain Marvel, and a Mjolnir-wielding Captain America. This imbalance of power and effectiveness will only be worse in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, as the MCU now features even more incredibly powerful heroes like the Eternals, Shang-Chi, and an even stronger Doctor Strange. It’s unclear what heroes like Kate Bishop or Yelena Belova will be able to do in a fight against Kang that these other Avengers can’t do better.

The Council Of Kangs Means Every Avenger Can Be Important

Thankfully, the MCU’s Council of Kangs is the perfect answer to ensure that every hero in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty feels both useful and appropriately challenged. While it may be increasingly difficult to justify sticking all the Avengers together on one battlefield, the Council of Kangs presents a perfect opportunity to go in a completely different direction, more befitting of the MCU’s massive cast of heroes. As seen in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Kang is scary because he isn’t just one person. Instead, the villain makes up a massive collection of variants from across the multiverse.

The council appears to be led by Kang variants Rama-Tut, Immortus, and the Scarlet Centurion, but hundreds of other Kangs are shown gathering as the group plans its next move. Presumably, not all the Kangs are equally powerful. If the Council attacks the MCU Multiverse, different heroes can simultaneously fight different Kangs who are equitable to their power level. While the likes of Doctor Strange and Captain Marvel can take on the strongest Kangs, others can focus on weaker versions that pose a more grounded threat. Splitting the team in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty can do justice to them all and avoid power-level awkwardness.
