Justified: City Primeval Season 2 Prospect Gets An Update From Timothy Olyphant

Timothy Olyphant opens up about whether Justified: City Primeval season 2 will happen. The neo-Western crime drama served as a sequel series to the popular show Justified, following Olyphant’s grizzled deputy US Marshall Raylan Givens as he moves from Miami to Detroit, pursuing a criminal who has evaded law enforcement. The show is adapted from the Elmore Leonard novel City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit, and Justified: City Primeval‘s cast allowed the franchise to evolve and grow as a reboot.

Speaking with Vanity Fair, Olyphant spoke about his desire to return for Justified: City Primeval season 2, if the opportunity were to present itself. He talked about the spark the novel provided, as well as the need to bring the cast and crew back together if there was to be a follow-up, and stated, “I hope it’s still part of the conversation. I have no idea, but if somebody told me that they wanted to do it, I’d give it the old college try, to try to come up with something good. I stay in touch with everybody and we’d get together and say, “We should do something,” but it was hard to find the spark of what that thing was going to be. The book [City Primeval] provided the spark, and I remember thinking like, “If we can get the book, we could do a season, we could do a couple,” because once we get everyone back together, the conversation starts.

We also don’t have the pressure of coming back right away every season the way a TV show does. I guess to answer your question, I hope it’s still part of the conversation. I would love it. I know Walton would love to do it. The fact that they let the writers put that sort of cliffhanger at the end of this, I assume that means they’re interested, but I don’t know. We probably spent way too much money.

There Are Signs That Justified: City Primeval Could Return

While Justified: City Primeval season 2 has yet to be confirmed, Olyphant seems keen to bring it back and explore more stories surrounding Raylan. Despite the fact the show was intended as a miniseries, it is entirely possible that it could return for another installment, especially given the critical success of the first season. Justified: City Primeval‘s season 1 finale concluded with a showdown between Raylan and Clement Mansell, as well as the shock return of the villainous Boyd Crowder.

The way the first season ended set up Justified: City Primeval for season 2 in a way that would not feel forced, and there are numerous open plot threads that can be explored in greater detail. That, along with Olyphant’s interest in a potential second season, means it is fairly likely that FX will renew it. It wouldn’t be the same as renewing a show that has run its course; it appears there is still life in this project. There are many reasons to be excited about a renewal, such as the opportunity to set up an ending that would bookend the franchise in the most complete way possible.

However, there are no guarantees in television, and it’s entirely possible that the revival series was only ever intended to run one season despite its ending. However, based on Olyphant’s comments and the storylines explored in the first season, there is every chance that Justified: City Primeval could get a season 2 renewal. It will be a complicated case of perfecting the scripts and ensuring everyone is on the right schedule to make the show as great as it can possibly be, but it could very well happen sometime soon.
