Justice League’s Young Justice Finally Have the Leader Fans Demanded

Warning: this article contains spoilers for Dark Crisis: Young Justice #6!The iconic team of the 90s, Young Justice has, for the most part, been led by Robin, Tim Drake. It’s almost a Robin rite of passage to lead a superhero team. As one of the oldest sidekicks in DC Comics, it makes sense. However, if it were up to the fans, it’s about time a few roles changed hands—and Wonder Girl proves it in Dark Crisis: Young Justice.

Just like her predecessor, Wonder Girl is a warrior and natural leader. In the original Young Justice comic, Cassie is eventually elected as team leader over Tim Drake, proving that even her teammates value and recognize her leadership. In the Teen Titans, she was once again leader. Unfortunately, Cassie didn’t truly have the opportunity to shine, as it seemed like members of the team were dying every other week while she was leader. Regardless, Wonder Girl has had her moments of brilliance, her will and determination tipping the scales in favor of whatever team she’s on.

Should Wonder Girl Be The Leader of Young Justice?

In Dark Crisis: Young Justice #6, by Meghan Fitzmartin, Laura Braga and Luis Guerrero, Young Justice face off against their biggest (and angriest) fan, Mickey Mxyzptlk. At the beginning of the issue, Mickey tries to divide the team to weaken them. His first target is, of course, Robin. By silencing Robin, he believes Young Justice will easily fall. Impulse knows otherwise, and the first person he turns to is Cassie. Slowing down time, Bart explains that he has a plan to stop Mickey, and he needs her help. Cassie tells him that he makes a good leader, but Bart immediately turns it back on her. Sure, he’s smart and has really proven himself to the rest of the team during this series, but Bart recognizes Cassie’s leadership qualities and her determination to pull the team together. Even when they first entered Mickey’s world, Young Justice was subconsciously turning to fake Cassie for guidance.

Throughout Dark Crisis: Young Justice, Cassie has continually proved her loyalty to Young Justice, even when it seemed like there was no way of getting Robin, Impulse and Superboy back from Mickey Mxyzptlk’s alternate reality. Despite being Young Justice’s predominant leader, Tim Drake shares too many similarities with Batman. He has a tendency to isolate himself and can be more lone wolf than pack leader. More importantly, there’s his classic Bat-flavor of trust issues. Wonder Girl isn’t like that. Cassie trusts her teammates, going along with Bart’s plan, even when she can’t see the full picture. Unlike Robin, she doesn’t feel the need to constantly be in control.

Tim Drake has been the leader of Young Justice, the Teen Titans and the Outsiders. Now, Robin has his own path to carve in Gotham’s Marina, one best traveled alone. It’s about time Young Justice has a change in leadership and Wonder Girl is the perfect candidate.
