Justice League’s Anti-Godzilla Weapon Just Gave the MonsterVerse Its New Mechagodzilla

Spoilers for Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong #1!After much hype, the Justice League and Godzilla have finally met face-to-face in a new crossover miniseries, with the possibility of this iconic superhero team adding a Mechagodzilla-level threat to their ranks in an attempt to even the odds in their upcoming city-wide brawls with both Godzilla and Kong. And thanks to the one and only Jim Lee, fans get a sneak peek of what this kaiju-killer weapon could look like once it finally makes its on-panel debut!

Initially created by aliens to fight Godzilla and then subsequently portrayed as a man-made weapon used to help defend Japan against the same radioactive threat, Mechagodzilla is arguably one of Godzilla’s top foes and is the perfect template for the Justice League to use when thinking of ways to take him down.

Already battling the King of Monsters more than once on the big screen, Mechagodzilla’s most recent appearance was in the MonsterVerse’s Godzilla vs. Kong, with the idea of the League taking a similar approach in trying to defeat Godzilla being a sound one, especially with the League’s best tinkerer in Batman developing this towering anti-Godzilla mech.

Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong Cover DC

A behemoth of a weapon that technically hasn’t been revealed in-story just yet, this towering mech is first seen on the Jim Lee variant cover for the premiere issue of Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong, written by writer Brian Buccellato and artist Christian Duce. Drawn by DC’s Chief Creative Officer in his usual patented art style that makes everything look and feel like a big-budget summer blockbuster, this Mechagodzilla-like mech is shown taking a shot at Godzilla as skyscrapers crumble and crash down around them with the rest of the League rushing in to lend a helping hand.

A cover reveal that gives fans something to look forward to as it makes complete and total sense to have Batman create an enormous battle mech to take down both Godzilla and, assumedly, Kong, this idea falls right in line with Mechagodzilla’s purpose as a Godzilla deterrent, putting the DC Universe well on its way to being ready for any future kaiju incursions as well. Furthermore, this helps The Dark Knight matter and stay involved in a fight that would normally see him squished under the foot of Godzilla or Kong, as he’s the only real member of the League who couldn’t do much damage in his “base” form.

So while this towering kaiju-sized bat-mech wasn’t featured in the first issue of Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong, it’s only a matter of time before Batman takes it out for a spin to even the playing field, something that’s likely to happen sooner rather than later since this particular cover is illustrated by Jim Lee, a creator who is usually pretty in-the-know for all things DC. It’s unclear at this point if Justice League’s version of Mechagodzilla is something that could take Godzilla down for good, but as seen in this piece of art, it’s at the very least going to give him one hell of a fight.
