“Just Wanted To Have Some Fun”: Meryl Streep Reveals How She Landed Only Murders In The Building Role

Meryl Streep explains how she joined the cast of Only Murders in the Building. As a special guest star, Streep made her series debut in season 3 as Loretta Durkin, a talented but struggling actor who gets her breakthrough role in the Broadway show directed by Oliver Putnam (Martin Short). Loretta also develops a romantic relationship with Oliver and becomes a central part of season 3’s overarching mystery. The Academy Award-winning Streep is confirmed to be returning for Only Murders in the Building season 4.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, Streep joined Short and her co-stars Steve Martin and Selena Gomez, showrunner John Hoffman, and songwriters Benji Pasek and Justin Paul for a For You Consideration event moderated by co-star Jane Lynch. Streep told the crowd at the event that before being cast, she was already a fan of Only Murders in the Building and called Martin to join the series after having had a “really fun” time collaborating with him on their 2009 movie, It’s Complicated. Read the rest of Streep’s explanation below:

“I was a huge fan of the show, but I also just wanted to have some fun because the world is pretty sh***y right now.”

What’s Next For Loretta In Only Murders In The Building Season 4?

Loretta’s promising relationship with Oliver has already set her season 4 return, especially since it was confirmed that the new installment will largely take place in Los Angeles. At the end of Only Murders in the Building season 3, Loretta decided to move to Los Angeles to be closer to her son Dickie Glenroy (Jeremy Shamos) and to further pursue her acting career after her breakout success in Oliver’s Death Rattle Dazzle. Oliver discusses visiting her there, with Mabel Mora (Gomez) also talking about seeing her boyfriend, Tobert (Jesse Williams), who is also moving to Los Angeles.

Loretta may want to focus on her career, make up for lost time with her son, and continue to develop her relationship with Oliver. Still, she will likely become embroiled in the latest murder investigation conducted by Oliver, Mabel, and Charles-Haden Savage (Martin). Season 3 ended with Charles’ Brazzos stunt double and good friend Sazz Pataki (Lynch) being murdered at the Arconia. At the time, Sazz was in Charles’ apartment and dressed like Charles, raising the question of whether Charles or Sazz was the killer’s target.
