Jurassic World’s Jenna Ortega Twist Was The Wrong Decision

Jurassic World’s Jenna Ortega Twist Was The Wrong Decision

The upcoming Jurassic World: Chaos Theory seems to have killed off Jenna Ortega’s Brooklyn, which is a big blow to the series even before it comes out. The sequel to Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, Chaos Theory seems to be picking up on loose threads left from both that series and the events of films like Jurassic World: Dominion. With dinosaurs now loose on the mainland and butting heads with human society as a whole, shows like Chaos Theory present a compelling direction for the Jurassic Park franchise to go in the future.

However, it seems the show will be doing so without one of its best possible leads. Jenna Ortega played Brooklyn across Camp Cretaceous‘ five-season run on Netflix, but the trailer for Chaos Theory suggests she won’t have much of a role in the new show. It’s a shame because Brooklyn was a compelling member of the cast whose newfound association with one of Hollywood’s big up-and-coming stars could have further pushed the series into the spotlight.

Brooklyn’s apparent death in Jurassic World: Chaos Theory is a blow to the series, even if it isn’t exactly what it seems. Brooklyn was one of the main characters of Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, which focused on six teenagers struggling to survive on Isla Nublar during the events of Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Brooklyn was a savvy social media influencer who steadily developed into one of the group’s most dependable leaders. The flash-forward at the end of Camp Cretaceous revealed she had carried on her investigations into companies like Mantah Corp and people like Dr. Wu.

However, the trailer for Chaos Theory suggests that Brookyln’s investigations ended up leading to her death. While digging into a new dinosaur mystery, Brooklyn is seemingly found out and killed when a dinosaur is unleashed after her. Her final video and message to her friends include information about the group she was looking into, who have decided to go after the other survivors. Brooklyn’s death serves as the inciting incident of Jurassic World: Chaos Theory, sending the other characters into action and introducing drama into the group.

Brooklyn’s apparent death is a tragic turn for the show to take, both in-universe and in real life. Brooklyn was a compelling character across the course of Camp Cretaceous, with an agency and unique perspective that helped her stand out from the rest of the group. While her loss might be a strong motivating force for the other heroes, it’ll be a shame to lose her impact on the overall group dynamic. Brooklyn’s death could potentially lead the show to retread through the kind of character drama that occurred in the previous series, particularly if the guilt over her fate impacts Darius and Koji’s relationship.

There’s also the fact that Jenna Ortega, who played Brooklyn in Camp Cretaceous, has become a much bigger star in the years since Camp Cretaceous debuted. Thanks to hits like Wednesday and the Scream films, Ortega has become a far more in-demand actor. Having her play a major role in Chaos Theory would have likely attracted more attention to the series. However, by recasting the character and seemingly killing her off early in the season, Chaos Theory loses its connection to one of Hollywood’s up-and-coming stars.

Could Brooklyn’s Death Be A Fakeout In Jurassic World: Chaos Theory?

Brooklyn Could Return To Chaos Theory In The Same Way Ben Did In Camp Cretaceous

There’s always a chance that Brooklyn’s apparent death is a fake-out. The trailer indicates that the world at large believes she’s dead, but no death is actually featured in the trailer. While she’s in clear danger, it’s the sort of situation she’s survived several times already. Camp Cretaceous has also used the death fake-out trick before and the series’ creatives could be utilizing it again for the new show. In season 1 of Camp Cretaceous, Ben was seemingly killed during a dinosaur attack.

The show legitimately played it like he had been killed off before eventually teasing his survival at the very end of the season. Brooklyn could be experiencing a similar story arc, potentially going into hiding to avoid the forces hunting for her. This could allow the character to still be a driving motivator for the show while giving Brooklyn the chance to return down the line, even if Ortega doesn’t play the character in the future. With the heightened stakes and danger of Jurassic World: Chaos Theory, there’s a good chance Ortega’s Brooklyn is gone.
