Jurassic World Reveals How Dodgson Has Nedry’s Barbasol Can In Dominion

Warning: SPOILERS for Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous Season 5

The mystery of how Lewis Dodgson (Campbell Scott) had Dennis Nedry’s (Wayne Knight) Barbasol can in Jurassic World Dominion was answered by Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous season 5. Still stuck in Mantah Corp Island, the teenage Campers work to foil the schemes of Mantah Corp’s President, Daniel Kon (Andrew Kishino), who developed technology to place dinosaurs under human control. Mr. Kon and his son Kenji (Ryan Potter) return to Isla Nublar in Camp Cretaceous season 5 so that Mantah Corp can make a pivotal business deal with BioSyn and its head, Dr. Lewis Dodson (voiced by Adam Harrington).

As Dodgson attempts to flee BioSyn’s dinosaur sanctuary late in Jurassic World Dominion, the film makes a point of showing that Lewis somehow has the Barbasol can that he gave to Dennis Nedry in 1993. Early in Jurassic Park, Dodgson (then played by Cameron Thor) met with Nedry in Costa Rica and paid InGen’s computer programmer to sabotage Jurassic Park’s security and steal 15 dinosaur embryos. The Barbasol can was really a disguised cooling unit for the embryos and Nedry was meant to escape the island and deliver the samples to Dodgson. But that never happened; Nedry bungled his escape thanks to a tropical storm and he was killed by Dilophosaurus. The Barbasol can was buried in the mud on Isla Nublar and presumed lost. Yet the Barbasol can was inexplicably in Dodgson’s possession in Jurassic World Dominion.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous season 5, episode 6, “Out of the Pack,” offers the explanation for Dodgson having the fateful Barbasol can. The director of BioSyn personally came to Isla Nublar to see a demonstration of Mantah Corp’s dinosaur control technology. Dodgson joins Mr. Kon, Kenji, Dr. Mae Turner (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), and their mercenaries on a trek across Isla Nublar, and Lewis just happens to find the Barbasol can buried in the dirt. Recognizing it immediately, Dodgson says, “I haven’t seen you in 25 years” and he takes the can, which still contains the long-dead dinosaur embryos, with him. In truth, the moment is utterly contrived since Dodgson randomly stumbles onto the Barbasol can, which was somehow in shallow dirt on the path he was walking on. It’s a clumsy but straightforward explanation for how and why Dodgson has the Barbasol can in Jurassic World Dominion.

Camp Cretaceous Teases Dodgson’s Jurassic World Dominion Death

Jurassic World Reveals How Dodgson Has Nedry’s Barbasol Can In Dominion

Immediately after Dodgson discovers Nedry’s lost Barbasol can, Camp Cretaceous season 5 teases Lewis’ death in Jurassic World Dominion when he’s attacked by Dilophosaurus. BioSyn’s director barely escapes being blinded by the Dilophosaurus’ venom like Nedry was and he’s saved by Daniel Kon. Of course, in Jurassic World Dominion, Dodgson isn’t so lucky when he’s swarmed by Dilophosaurus in his Hyperloop. All alone and defenseless, Lewis is blinded by venom and eaten by the Dilophosaurus. Dodgson’s death is meant to ironically echo Nedry’s but Camp Cretaceous adds another level by showing Lewis survived the Dilophosaurus on Isla Nublar.

There is a cool factor to seeing Lewis Dodgson finally set foot in Jurassic World, however. Dodgson and BioSyn stayed far away from John Hammond’s (Richard Attenborough) in Jurassic Park, preferring to let their hired gun, Nedry, do their dirty work. BioSyn didn’t return as a major part of the franchise until Jurassic World Dominion, explaining that Dodgson’s BioSyn ultimately bought the dinosaur assets of Hammond’s InGen and their successors, Masrani Global Corporation. It’s a great bit of wider franchise continuity for Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous to be able to show how Dodgson acquired the Barbasol can from Jurassic Park. Yet it’s also a bit frustrating that Jurassic World Dominion left the hows and whys to Netflix’s lesser-seen animated spinoff so that the general audiences who watched the film are left with no real explanation for Dodgson possessing Nedry’s Barbasol can.

All 5 seasons of Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous are available to stream on Netflix.
