Jurassic World Pitch Meeting — Revisited

Jurassic World Pitch Meeting — Revisited

As a new movie enters development, Screen Rant‘s Pitch Meeting series is revisiting its Jurassic World analysis. The 2015 movie served as a revival of the Michael Crichton-based adventure franchise, finding the titular park actually operational, though finds itself threatened when a genetically altered breed escapes captivity and goes on a rampage. Garnering generally positive reviews and becoming the second-highest-grossing movie of the year, it launched a Jurassic World trilogy that saw more divisive reviews but consistently breaking the $1 billion mark at the box office.

Nearly a decade after it first hit theaters, the latest episode of Screen Rant‘s Pitch Meeting series is looking back on its original Jurassic World breakdown. The video, as seen at the top of this article, includes the original analysis which reflected on some of the sequel’s bigger flaws, including its extensive product placement and some of its over-the-top deaths for characters undeserving of their fates. Host Ryan George also reflects on his prior episode, recalling some of the anxieties he felt while making it and why he overall enjoyed World despite some of its issues.

The Next Jurassic World Should Take 1 Lesson From The 2015 Movie

Though there were some issues with the movie, George’s recollection of Jurassic World‘s overall entertainment value is not only helpful in looking back on the sequel, but also an important lesson for the franchise to factor in heading into the next installment. Despite Dominion being described as the culmination of all six movies, franchise producer Frank Marshall confirmed around the time of the threequel’s release that there were still plans to continue it beyond the 2022 movie. The new Jurassic World movie was finally announced in January with original Jurassic Park writer David Koepp returning.

While Koepp has already shown his strengths in adapting the imaginative nature of Crichton’s novel for the screen with the first two movies, one of the key factors he should pull from the first Jurassic World movie heading into its next installment is its self-awareness. Crichton did frequently tap into the dangers of the science being explored by John Hammond and the titular amusement park, but he also often explored themes of capitalism via amusement parks. It was a theme Crichton also explored in Westworld, with the HBO show diving deeper into the artificial intelligence angle of the source.

Writer Michael Crichton launched franchises like Jurassic Park & Westworld as a novelist, screenwriter & director; we rank all of his sci-fi movies.

The consumerism nature of Crichton’s work may not necessarily be the main draw for audiences, but a return to the tongue-in-cheek satire of Jurassic World would be a beneficial approach for Koepp in the next installment. Much of the 2015 movie’s humor stemmed from being self-aware of the zany concept driving the franchise forward, including reviving it for a modern audience. Given Fallen Kingdom and Dominion garnered more mixed reviews as Colin Trevorrow explored the more scientific side of the story and turned toward a dramatic tone, Jurassic World‘s blend of lighthearted dinosaur action and serious themes would be a nice return to form.
