The trailer for Jurassic World: Dominion gives a glimpse of a world transformed – as dinosaurs transform the Earth’s ecological system, and threaten to render humanity extinct. Director Colin Trevorrow has always insisted he knew how Jurassic World‘s story would play out. As Trevorrow explained back in 2017, in his view it’s essential to have a director for your entire trilogy. “I remember telling Steven [Spielberg] even while we were making the first movie, “This is the beginning. Here is the middle. And here’s the end of the end.” This is where we want to go. I feel like that kind of design is crucial to a franchise like this if you really want to bring people along with you and make sure they stay interested. It needs to be thought through on that level. It can’t be arbitrary, especially if we want to turn this into a character-based franchise with people who you lean in to follow what they’re going to do.“
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom ended on a dramatic cliffhanger, with eleven species of dinosaur unleashed on North America. “Welcome to Jurassic World,” Ian Malcolm declared before a montage that showed a Tyrannosaurus Rex trading roars with a lion when it strode into a zoo, the Mosausaurus snacking on surfers, and even a last glimpse of Blue. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom‘s end-credits went one step further, with a pair of Pteranodon flying across the Las Vegas skyline. Where previous installments of the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World franchise have focused on people going to an artificial ecosystem populated by dinosaurs, now the dinosaurs have gotten lose.
The first trailer for Jurassic World: Dominion essentially shows human beings and dinosaurs in competition for domination of the world. Dinosaurs are radically transforming the Earth’s ecosystems, and there are fears of human extinction. Here are all the takeaways from this dramatic trailer and all 15 dinos in the trailer.
Owen Grady Is Trying To Control The Dinosaurs
The Jurassic World: Dominion trailer opens with a shot of Chris Pratt’s Owen Grady, one of the heroes of the relaunched franchise. More experienced than most when it comes to handling dinosaurs, he’s clearly trying to control the havoc that’s been created by unleashing them upon the world. The opening shots show him working with a group who are attempting to corral a herd of Parasaurolophus. Curiously, there are eight of the creatures, although only six were believed to have escaped in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom; either they’ve been breeding, or continuity isn’t going to be this franchise’s strong suit.
The Dinosaurs May Struggle To Survive
The problem, of course, is that the dinosaurs did not evolve on present-day North America – nor are they suited to this environment. In fact, some of the larger dinosaurs are believed to have evolved in swamps simply because they were too massive to support their own weight on dry land – and they required high temperatures than the present world. The Jurassic World: Dominion trailer shows one shot of an Apatosaurus calling out mournfully as it wanders through snowfall. Many of the herbivores will struggle to survive. Giving a sense of just how widespread the dinosaurs are by this point in time, Maisie is in-shot – and the backpack she’s wearing seems to suggest she was simply walking to school.
Jurassic World: Dominion Introduces Baby Blue
But some of the dinosaurs are indeed breeding. The Jurassic World: Dominion trailer shows Owen’s beloved Blue – with a youngling. Owen and his family are bringing them up, with Owen presumably trying to train Baby Blue just as he did her mother. The concerning question, though, is which other species of dinosaur are reproducing out in the wild; Owen is likely to have Blue and her baby under control, but other creatures could be far more dangerous. These shots are accompanied by the slogan of the entire Jurassic Park franchise, which has taken on a much more ominous meaning by now; “Life will find a way.” Later shots in the trailer confirm other Velociraptors will be rather less friendly than Blue and Baby Blue, with Owen forced to play chase to lead them out of a city.
The Mesosaurus Proves Humans & Dinosaurs Can’t Coexist
Out in the ocean, the Mesosaurus continues to wreak havoc – in this case disrupting a fishing vessel, capsizing it. The Mesosaurus is unique in that it actually escaped Isla Nublar under its own power, swimming away after the volcanic eruption. But this shot in the Jurassic World: Dominion trailer perfectly illustrates the problems when humans and dinosaurs are attempting to exist in the same world; the sheer size and scale of some of these reptiles means they exert massive pressure upon both the built and natural environments. Worse still, seventy percent of the Earth’s surface is water, meaning it will be very difficult to track down this Mesosaurus.
Jurassic World: Dominion Brings Back The Franchise’s Stars
Jurassic World: Dominion is being billed as the wrap-up to the entire saga, not just the Jurassic World trilogy, which means it features cast from the original Jurassic Park films as well – notably Jeff Goldblum’s Dr. Malcolm Laura Dern as Dr. Sattler, and Sam Neill as Dr. Grant. Goldblum actually returned in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, but he had little more than a cameo in spite of the fact he featured prominently in marketing. The trailer for Jurassic World: Dominion certainly seems to suggest these returning stars will play a much more significant role this time, though.
Humans May Be Building A New Jurassic Park
The fear, of course, is that the emergence of dinosaurs could lead to the extinction of the human race – because, although dinosaurs didn’t evolve in the modern world, humans didn’t evolve in competition with dinosaurs either. And yet, for all that’s the case, the Jurassic World: Dominion trailer suggests not everybody sees this relationship as adversarial – because there’s a shot of what seems to be a new habitat for the dinosaurs to live in, built to contain and protect them. It’s reasonable to assume Owen is involved in this project, because it would fit well with his own priorities.
Jurassic World: Dominion Gives A Surprising Glimpse of a Pyroraptor
Every film in the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World franchise features new dinosaurs, and that’s evidently true of Jurassic World: Dominion too. One shot in the trailer introduces the new Pyroraptor, something of a missing link between dinosaurs and birds thanks to the distinctive feathers and “wings”. The presence of a Pyroraptor serves as a reminder that evolution is a natural process – and thus it’s quite possible the dinosaurs will begin to evolve to suit their new world.
A Riff On A Classic Jurassic Park Scene
The Jurassic World: Dominion trailer ends with a flurry of action scenes, many of which are call-backs to the original films. The most memorable is a riff on the classic “Don’t move” scene, as the stars confront a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Dialogue lampshades the evolution of the franchise as a whole, with a quip on the fact that every movie features dinosaurs that are bigger than ever before – and spectacles that are more explosive to boot.
