Jurassic World Dominion Dinosaur Black Market Details Shared by Director

Director Colin Trevorrow recently shared details of the dinosaur black market featured in the upcoming film Jurassic World Dominion. The new franchise sequel will be the sixth in the series dating back to 1993 with the original Jurassic Park film, based on the Michael Crichton novel of the same name. Jurassic World Dominion will see much of the original cast reprise their roles including Sam Neill as Dr. Alan Grant, Laura Dern as Dr. Ellie Satler, Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Ian Malcolm, and BD Wong as Dr. Henry Wu. Wong was also featured in Jurassic World, the 2015 reboot of the franchise following a 14-year hiatus.

The conclusion of the previous film in the series, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, left the well-being of the surviving dinosaurs and the world in question. After saving a number of dinosaurs from Isla Nublar following the eruption of its volcano, they were placed in auction at a black market sale to the highest bidder. Following a series of set pieces and a high-stakes battle with the beloved Velociraptor Blue, the dinosaurs are released into the American Pacific Northwest to live free in the wild. But with the case of the dinosaurs throughout the film series, the animals are never truly free.

In a recent interview with Total Film (via Games Radar), Trevorrow revealed details about the underground dinosaur market featured in the upcoming film Jurassic World Dominion. The director explained the situation the dinosaurs are in following the previous film and shared the importance of the European island country of Malta to the business of illicit dinosaur-dealing. Read what Trevorrow said, below:

“There is one city. There’s a sequence in Malta. The dinosaurs didn’t come there by choice. Malta is really the hub for the dinosaur underground black market. It’s where they’re imported and exported, bought and sold. And that’s part of our world, too – the animals are displaced from their natural habitat, as they were in the last movie, and brought to other places where they don’t necessarily belong. And chaos can easily ensue there…”

Situating the center of the dinosaur black market world on the small island nation of Malta makes sense from an accessibility and safety point of view. The nation is small and off-the-radar of major authorities, and due to its location in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, there is an added layer of protection by the water—a fault corrected from the previous film’s black market sale location which took place on the mainland of the United States. However, recent trailers have shown that Malta will serve as the setting for one of the film’s biggest set pieces where the dinosaurs escape captivity on the island and chase Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) through the streets of Valletta, the country’s capital.

The plot of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom centered on the capture and sale of dinosaurs to the highest bidder. Some wished to use the prehistoric animals as weapons of war specifically designed to be used in battle. However, their overconfidence and lack of understanding of dinosaurs led to the disaster at the end of the film. It seems that even after multiple catastrophes, money still rules all and will yet again serve as an important aspect of the plot of Jurassic World Dominion.
