Jurassic World 4’s New Director Hints The Franchise Will Move Further Away From Spielberg

Jurassic World 4’s New Director Hints The Franchise Will Move Further Away From Spielberg

Jurassic World 4 is happening, but the film’s new director hints that the franchise will move even further away from Steven Spielberg. Although the original Jurassic Park was a major critical success, the sequels have continuously received dwindling critical reception as time has gone on, with the Jurassic World movies being a particular low point for the franchise. Despite this, Jurassic World Dominion was still a major box-office success, leading to the announcement of Jurassic World 4. While Jurassic World 4 could course-correct the franchise, it looks like it will hurt Spielberg’s original Jurassic Park vision even more.

Jurassic World Dominion claimed to be the epic conclusion to the Jurassic World saga, wrapping up the stories of Owen, Claire, and the other characters that have been the focus of the franchise since 2015’s Jurassic World. Despite this, there has been much speculation regarding the future of the Jurassic World franchise since the release of Jurassic World Dominion, with Jurassic Park being too big to simply end. Unsurprisingly, Jurassic World 4 has been announced, and while details are still being kept heavily under wraps, the choice of director signals that things may not get better for the franchise.

While the main characters from Jurassic Park and Jurassic World won’t appear in Jurassic World 4, others from the original trilogy can return.

David Leitch’s Involvement Teases A More Action-Focused Jurassic World 4

Director David Leitch will be taking on Jurassic World 4, and the filmmaker’s involvement teases that the upcoming film will be even more action-focused than its predecessors. David Letich is the director behind popular movies like Deadpool 2, Bullet Train, Atomic Blonde, and more, with Jurassic World 4 being just one of many major franchise movies that Leitch has had a hand in. David Leitch has had a positive critical and commercial track record, meaning that his involvement in Jurassic World 4 isn’t all that surprising.

The involvement of David Leitch promises that action will be a heavy focus of Jurassic World 4, as most of his previous films have been action-heavy blockbusters. The aforementioned films all feature stylized action scenes, and David Leitch’s producer role on the John Wick series further proves that pretty much everything he touches is action gold. The decision to bring Leitch on to Jurassic World 4 signals that the studio most likely wants action to be prominently featured in the upcoming sequel, possibly to a level not yet seen in the franchise.

Jurassic World 4’s Action Approach Takes The Franchise Further From Spielberg’s Vision

While David Leitch’s action-heavy approach to Jurassic World 4 may be exciting for some viewers, it actually takes the franchise further from Steven Spielberg’s vision. The first Jurassic Park movie does have action, but the action scenes are mostly focused on the dinosaurs. The most exciting action moments in the original film are Jurassic Park‘s iconic T. rex chase and the Velociraptor hunt, and the humans in both of these scenes are normal people who are caught up in a bad situation.

Jurassic World, on the other hand, handles its action much differently. The humans in the Jurassic World films are the action stars, with Chris Pratt’s Owen Grady being at the center of most of the franchise’s prominent action scenes. David Leitch’s previous films are mostly about action scenes focused on one action star, with this being in line with the Jurassic World trend. Thus, if Jurassic World 4 does double down on this idea, it will move the franchise’s spirit even further away from what Spielberg initially envisioned.

Jurassic World 4 Should Be More Like Jurassic Park, Not Less

If the Jurassic World franchise wants to get back on track, Jurassic World 4 needs to be more like Jurassic Park, not less. Jurassic Park is still the only film in the franchise that is consistently beloved, something that the next chapter of the Jurassic saga needs to recapture. Thus, Jurassic World 4 needs to stick to what works, focusing more on the wonder of the dinosaurs, the inner-workings of the theme park, and the moral questions rather than the action scenes.

Jurassic World 4 needs to be the movie that the franchise has promised for years now, not another action film in the same vein as Jurassic World Dominion. A human-focused action film can be fun, but that’s not what Jurassic World 4 needs to be, as the franchise should give a heavier focus to the dinosaur action. While it is possible that the film could wind up being good, what is currently known about the sequel makes Jurassic World 4 seem like a much bigger risk than it needs to be.
