Jurassic World 3’s Safety Protocols Made The Movie Better, Says Director

Safety protocols put in place for the Jurassic World: Dominion‘s production have made the film better, says director Colin Trevorrow. The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a variety of delays, cancellations, and measures to ensure the safety of casts and crews on productions.

In the case of Jurassic World: Dominion, the film was one of the first to resume production after lockdowns began to ease, and people began to try and move forward during difficult times. The process wasn’t an easy one, and at one point, it was revealed that a return to production brought additional costs as well due to constant COVID-19 tests on set. Fans have, of course, been eager for the next (and final) chapter in this latest Jurassic Park trilogy, even though cinemas are having an extremely tough time right now, and no one has any idea when the world will see the end of the current pandemic. None the less, Jurassic World: Dominion has now officially completed filming, and this brings fans one step closer to seeing what Trevorrow has done with the franchise’s third installment. Throughout this period, there has been much conjecture and discussion over the direction that Jurassic Wold: Dominion will head in, and concerns that the pandemic will affect the film’s quality continue.

While these sorts of concerns will likely continue until the film is released, for now at least, Trevorrow has stated that he believes the numerous safety measures put in place against COVID on the Dominion set have improved the film’s quality. Speaking with Deadline, Trevorrow discussed how the COVID protocols kept everyone closer together, ensuring that the cast and crew were a very tight ensemble. Trevorrow also admitted that he’s never been as immersed in a filmmaking process as he has been with this one:

“I think that close proximity to each other has made the movie better. Everything we were going through emotionally we would share. We would rehearse on Sundays, we crafted the characters, which made the emotion of the film richer. I think the movie will be stronger for it. I’ve never been as immersed in a filmmaking process. Because of the protocols, the actors didn’t go far from set. The distance was stripped away. There were things that happened on this movie that I’d hope to be able to continue on future productions.”

Some Jurassic World fans might feel that in order for Jurassic World: Dominion to be a success, a lot of things need to change or be focused on. The franchise kicked off with a bang with 2015’s Jurassic World, but audiences weren’t quite as taken with its 2018 follow up, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. After news arrived that Jurassic World: Dominion would be the final film in this current trilogy, the pressure became even greater for Trevorrow to finish things off in a way that befits the 27-year-old franchise. In this respect, COVID’s forced interruption of the production has given Trevorrow time to think over and vet every aspect of the sequel, meaning that the delays and strict on set protocols could indeed have been helpful.

However, more cynical fans might simply shrug off the idea that COVID prevention measures had any effect on Jurassic World: Dominion. An especially close set might have been something different for the film’s cast and crew, but whether or not that will actually translate to a Jurassic World film that fans are excited by remains to be seen. Still, most fans would likely rather hear that those involved with Jurassic World: Dominion had an enjoyable experience rather than a difficult and problematic one.
