Jurassic Park Still Holds Up Today

It’s now been 30 years since the release of Jurassic Park, and the film still stands as the best entry in the franchise. The CGI may be rudimentary by today’s standards, but it was groundbreaking at the time and was blended seamlessly with jaw-dropping practical effects and animatronics. Although technology has since advanced, the visual effects in the film still largely hold up to this day because of a variety of creative decisions.

Not only does much of the action take place in a darkened environment in the rain, but dinosaurs are actually shown on screen relatively sparingly compared to the more recent Jurassic World films. This allows anticipation to build during the film’s first act and makes the Tyrannosaurus Rex even more frightening and awe-inspiring when it does arrive. Furthermore, the shot composition and framing of dinosaurs like the brachiosaurus highlights the animals’ grand scale compared to the humans, making them truly a grand sight to behold.

Jurassic Park also, of course, introduces iconic characters like Dr. Alan Grant (Neill), Ellie Sattler (Dern), and Ian Malcolm (Goldblum), who would all go on to return for multiple additional installments. The future of the franchise is somewhat unclear at the moment following the release of Jurassic World Dominion last year, but Jurassic Park remains a truly groundbreaking achievement and possibly one of the most important films ever made.
