Jujutsu Kaisen Revolutionizes “Filler” Arcs With A Genius Twist

Jujutsu Kaisen Revolutionizes “Filler” Arcs With A Genius Twist

Warning! Contains spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Episode #9!Jujutsu Kaisen has proven that the Gojo’s Past arc at the beginning of the season wasn’t “filler”, as some fans labeled it, despite not being connected to the show’s main plot this season. Of course, even if that arc hadn’t been connected directly to the plot of the Shibuya Incident it still would have been a great exploration of Gojo and Geto’s relationship and motivations, but now its seemingly strange placement at the beginning of Season 2 makes perfect sense.

In Season 2 Episode #9 of Jujutsu Kaisen, Geto appears and traps Gojo in the Prison Realm, which was the main goal of the Shibuya Incident. To make this plan work, Gojo had to remain in one spot for an entire minute, which initially sounded like an incredibly difficult task given his extreme power level. However, it just had to be a minute in Gojo’s mind, and upon seeing Geto’s body the sorcerer quickly flashed through the events of his past, seen in the Gojo’s Past arc. This was more than enough to meet the sealing conditions thus trapping the strongest sorcerer in the series for the foreseeable future.

Gojo’s Past is Relevant For Jujutsu Kaisen‘s Shibuya Incident

This gives the superb arc of Gojo’s past a direct tie to the series’ main plot, but it already had an important role in revealing more about some of the show’s most important characters. While he may not be one of the main trio of Yuji, Nobara, and Megumi, Gojo is the strongest sorcerer in the series and thus is incredibly important. Likewise, his erstwhile friend Geto appeared to be the main antagonist of the series, so seeing his motivation seemed to be very important for contextualizing his actions in the rest of the series. Of course, this is now less important given the reveal that his body is hijacked by another sorcerer, but these character journeys still felt important regardless of how they connected to the main plot.

Despite how important it may have felt or how interesting it may have been, the “Gojo’s past” arc placement at the beginning of the second season felt kind of awkward given how long it had been since fans had seen the main characters of the series. Given most of the other characters introduced in that arc died, the direct relevance of Gojo’s past to the Shibuya Incident arc that follows it was questionable. However, the memories shown during Gojo’s sealing prove why it was needed where it was, as without it the success of the villain’s plan would have felt unearned.

Jujutsu Kaisen Proves Every Detail Is Important

Gojo gets sealed

As the Shibuya Incident continues, the arc may have even more surprising connections to Gojo’s brutal past even now that the incredibly powerful sorcerer is incapacitated. Even if it doesn’t, its relevance in this episode should forever silence any further accusations of the arc being filler. Hopefully, this example that Jujutsu Kaisen has set will cause fans to be a bit more hesitant in the future about writing off arcs that seem like off-topic tangents as being irrelevant filler.
