The up-and-coming director of Jujutsu Kaisen season 1, Sunghoo Park, is working with entertainment network Adult Swim to produce a violent and action-packed ninja series, Ninja Kamui. Based on the trailer, this anime will soon be on everyone’s radar.
This series was announced in May 2022 by Adult Swim with Sunghoo as the director. An early look at the anime was posted on the YouTube channel of Adult Swim, and it is everything fans hoped for and more. The gritty, dark tone of the story are complemented by some great action that does not shy away from blood and gore.
Ninja Kamui by Sungoo Park and Adult Swim is confirmed to start airing on February 11, 2024. The series will have 12 episodes and is an original anime. Based on the title and the story, Ninja Kamui was inspired by the 1964 manga Kamui by Sanpei Shirato, which also follows a renegade ninja seeking revenge, and inspired a 1969 anime series.

The series follows Joe Higan, a former ninja who escapes to America but is pursued by assassins for leaving the profession, targeting his family as well. Joe’s family and friends are all killed, and he returns as Ninja Kamui to exact revenge on his family and anyone involved in the brutal assault on him and his loved ones.
This is the first full-season anime for Sunghoo Park and his new studio, E&H Productions. Coming off the successful One Piece prequel Monsters, Park looks to establish his studio as one of the hottest in the business with this new series. Studio Sola Entertainment, who worked on Tower Of God and Rick and Morty: The Anime, will also take part in the production of the series. There are a lot of resources invested in Ninja Kamui, which shows how serious Adult Swim is in integrating anime into their offerings and portfolio.

The company sees the potential of anime as the race for digital streaming intensifies. Disney Plus, Netflix, and Amazon also want a bite of the anime pie as they aggressively bring more series to their platforms. It is truly fascinating to see the change in perception of the medium, and how much it has taken over the world in such a short time.
Ninja stories are not uncommon in anime, with the Naruto franchise reigning supreme. The recent show Under Ninja, the adaptation of a popular manga, has also received praise for its realistic setting and unusual characters. Ninja Kamui will face tough competition, but it seems to have all the tools to prove it’s more than just another ninja anime.
