Josh Hutcherson Explains His Spider-Man Audition Video & Reveals Why It’s Good He Lost The Role To Andrew Garfield

Josh Hutcherson brings new light to his audition as Peter Parker for The Amazing Spider-Man and explains why the Marvel role ultimately went to the right person. Shortly before he gained popularity for playing Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games, Hutcherson sent in a video audition for The Amazing Spider-Man but ultimately lost out to Andrew Garfield. Still, the idea of Hutcherson playing the Wall Crawler isn’t so far-fetched, and it’s an interesting “what if” scenario that many would still like to see played out.

Hutcherson’s affable personality seems to be a great fit for Peter Parker, and the actor recently spoke about his audition in an interview with Wired. The actor auditioned by filming his own audition tape (with stunts) and sending it in, which isn’t uncommon in the industry – Barry Keoghan landed the role of the Joker in The Batman thanks to a video he sent in auditioning for the Riddler. In the end, things seemed to turn out for the best for Hutcherson, as he likely wouldn’t have landed his Hunger Games role if he committed to Spider-Man. Read Hutcherson’s comments on his audition below:

“I [auditioned for] the Andrew Garfield version. One of my friends who had been my stunt double for a few movies, he and I went down to this like stunt training gym called 8711, and we decided to shoot me doing some Spider-Man stunts. I didn’t get it, but the crazy thing was like, I think a month after that, I got cast in Hunger Games.”

Though The Amazing Spider-Man movies are often considered underrated, there are a number of harsh realities that come with rewatching the two films.

How Josh Hutcherson Could Still Play Spider-Man

For anyone lamenting the chance to see Hutcherson play Spider-Man, it’s still possible the pairing could happen in the future. With so many multiverse projects in the works, it would be easy to have Hutcherson show up as Peter Parker for a quick cameo. Sony has already proved they are open to live-action cameos in the Spider-Verse films with Donald Glover as the Prowler, and Avengers: Secret Wars could also give fans new versions of their favorite heroes.

This wouldn’t even be the first time an actor who missed out on a chance to play a superhero was later given a cameo. After all, Nicolas Cage showed up as Superman in The Flash after his project famously fell through, though Cage himself wasn’t actually on screen. Still, there is hope that Josh Hutcherson may still get a chance to suit up as Spider-Man, even if just for a bit role.
