The surprise success of the 2014 original film led Reeves to return as the titular hitman for three sequels, the most recent of which hit theaters earlier this year. Following the ambiguous John Wick: Chapter 4 ending, Lionsgate announced a sequel, but director Chad Stahelski and Reeves have been more measured in their responses regarding whether another film will actually happen.

What Could John Wick 5 Be About?

Despite Lionsgate’s announcement, there’s still some question as to whether John Wick 5 will actually happen. Stahelski recently commented on the possibility, expressing that neither he nor Reeves is entirely opposed to returning for another installment, but they both have to feel like they’ve found a story worth telling, something that evidently hasn’t happened yet. This is also a tall order considering Reeves himself pushed for a definitive John Wick death.

If another movie does end up happening, however, the ending of the latest sequel creates some interesting storytelling problems to solve. The ending sees Reeves’ assassin seemingly succumb to his wounds, but it’s shot in such a way as to leave things somewhat open-ended. Clearly, John Wick 5 would see the character having survived his wounds, but Wick’s story with the High Table seems mostly to have concluded. For this reason, a fifth movie may have to take things in a different direction.

John Wick: Chapter 4 feels like the culmination of a story that began in the first movie, so a follow-up would seemingly have to serve as a reinvention of sorts for the franchise. One theory for the fifth film stemming from Stahelski’s own comments, for example, posits that John Wick, the assassin, has truly died, but John, the man, lives on. This would mean a story in which John has left his assassin life behind yet again, potentially opening up the door for John Wick 5 to tell a smaller and more intimate story with a somewhat different tone.
