John Cena Wants His F9 Character To Face Dwayne Johnson’s Hobbs

F9 star John Cena would be interested in facing down Dwayne Johnson’s Hobbs in a future Fast & Furious installment. WWE and soon-to-be DCEU star Cena makes his Fast & Furious debut this weekend with F9, the ninth movie in the long-running franchise. He plays Jakob, the long-lost estranged brother of Dominic (Vin Diesel) and Mia Toretto (Jordana Brewster). As F9‘s primary villain, Jakob aims to take revenge on his siblings for a past slight, and he’s teamed up with Fate of the Furious‘ Cipher (Charlize Theron) to do so.

While F9 features some major franchise returns like Mia and Han Lue (Sung Kang), there are some notable characters who are sitting this one out. That includes Johnson’s Luke Hobbs, who has been a franchise mainstay since Fast Five. The reason for his absence in F9 isn’t quite clear, though Johnson famously feuded with Diesel on the set of the previous film. Things have settled between the two since then. Johnson also went on to lead the 2019 spin-off Hobbs & Shaw alongside Jason Statham.

Since Cena and Johnson are both WWE legends, there are many who would be interested in the two crossing paths in the Fast & Furious world. Cena was asked about the possibility of this happening while speaking to ComicBook.com, and he admitted he would be open to it. However, Cena also pointed out he’s not in charge of deciding these things. “Well, I am definitely not high in the decision-making ladder in that process, so I’m a dreamer just like you,” the actor said. “I would say that the things that I know are it was very captivating entertainment for over two years in WWE programming and usually what’s entertaining is entertaining. I’d like to see it. Well, like I said, I’m pretty low on the decision-making ladder in that.”

There are two more movies planned in the Fast & Furious franchise after F9, and the door is wide open for a WWE showdown. Director Justin Lin has already acknowledged that Hobbs could return for Fast & Furious 10. Meanwhile, depending on the events of F9, Cena could easily be back as Jakob, which would then allow him the chance to come face to face with Hobbs. A law man like Hobbs probably won’t get along with criminal Jakob, but it could make for an intriguing dynamic. That is, as long as it isn’t a carbon copy of Hobbs’ relationship with Deckard Shaw.

Fast & Furious 10 and 11 will serve as the two-part conclusion of the entire franchise, so they are bound to be massive movies. With F9 reviving a previously dead character in Han and taking the crew to space, it already feels like the franchise has reached a high point. Of course, when it comes to Fast & Furious, there are always more places where it can go. Hopefully, that includes bringing characters like Jakob and Hobbs together for fun interactions.
