Jim Carrey’s $302 Million Comedy Hit Has A Genius Cameo From A Totally Different Jim Carrey Character

Jim Carrey’s 2 Million Comedy Hit Has A Genius Cameo From A Totally Different Jim Carrey Character

Liar Liar is among Jim Carrey’s most notable movies, but what is less well-known is that the film actually features a cameo from another iconic Carrey character. The 1997 film, which is arguably one of Jim Carrey’s best movies, tells the story of lawyer and habitual liar Fletcher Reede, who is cursed with telling only the truth for a whole day. In addition to bringing his unique brand of humor to the character of Reede, Carrey also makes a surprising cameo as one of his most famous sketch characters.

Along with films such as The Truman Show, Dumb and Dumber, and The Mask, Liar Liar perfectly explained Jim Carrey’s career and helped him achieve worldwide movie stardom. Prior to his big screen career, Carrey was predominantly known for his work in sketch comedy. Many of Jim Carrey’s characters have gone on to make a big impression. However, only one character from Carrey’s sketch show days has ever made it onto the big screen.

Jim Carrey movies can come with a surprising amount of lore, and one detail about a 27-year-old Carrey comedy movie makes it even better.

Jim Carrey Plays Fire Marshall Bill In Liar Liar’s Ending

Fire Marshall Bill Has A Brief Cameo

Carey Elwes talking to a cop with Fire Marshall Bill in the background in Liar Liar.

During the climax of Liar Liar, Carrey’s Fletcher Reede hijacks a mobile stairway at an airport in order to reach his son, Max, to tell him that he will make it his priority to spend more time with him. In typical Jim Carrey movie fashion, he manages to stop the plane, but not before being flung off the stairway in a slapstick manner. The next scene depicts Fletcher on a stretcher as his ex-wife, Audrey (Maura Tierney), speaks to a police officer. In the background of the shot, among a crowd of people, is a rather suspicious-looking fire marshall.

On closer inspection, it’s clear that this is Carrey himself in character as In Living Color‘s Fire Marshall Bill. Anyone familiar with Carrey’s pre-Hollywood career will know that Fire Marshall Bill was one of several Jim Carrey characters from In Living Color, a sketch show that aired on Fox in the early ’90s. Though Fire Marshall Bill’s appearance in Liar Liar is brief, it still acts as a pleasing callback to Carrey’s early career and may even point to some sort of Jim Carrey shared universe.

Jim Carrey’s History As Fire Marshall Bill On In Living Color

Carrey Starred In The Series For Five Seasons

Created by Keenen Ivory Wayans and starring multiple members of the Wayans family, In Living Color ran for five seasons between 1990 and 1994. Jim Carrey was one of several regulars on the show and it’s thanks to his work on In Living Color that he first began getting movie roles. Undoubtedly, Carrey’s most popular character on the show was Fire Marshall Bill Burns. The only character to appear throughout the entirety of In Living Color‘s run, Fire Marshall Bill was a clumsy and slightly deranged fire marshall whose job was to warn people of everyday dangers.

It goes without saying that because In Living Color was a comedy sketch show and owing to Carrey’s manic sense of humor, Fire Marshall Bill only ever made situations more dangerous. For instance, one sketch started with Bill warning schoolchildren of the hazards of changing the water in a fish tank and ended with him setting the whole classroom on fire. Another sees Bill visiting an Asian restaurant and telling the chef about the dangers associated with preparing a spiny sea urchin before proceeding to stick a spike of said urchin in his own eye.

How Fire Marshall Bill’s cameo at the end of Liar Liar came about isn’t really known. Perhaps Carrey just thought it would be a fun opportunity to reprise the role that made him famous. Whatever the case, Bill’s appearance in Liar Liar only demonstrates Carrey’s versatility as a performer and his ability to craft iconic comedy characters. It also highlights how Bill, as well as Carrey’s other In Living Color characters, have the potential to make the leap to the big screen. It would certainly be fun to see more from Fire Marshall Bill in the future.
