Jennifer Lopez & Owen Wilson Are Accidental Newlyweds In Marry Me Trailer

Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson star opposite each other as accidental newlyweds in Universal Pictures’ new movie Marry Me. Lopez plays music superstar Kat Valdez who is set to wed her famous love Bastian (Maluma) before an international audience of fans. Seconds before the public nuptials, she finds out her celebrity love has been unfaithful, prompting her to spontaneously say I do to a random man in the crowd (Wilson). The romantic comedy is based on the webcomic of the same name, which was created and written by Bobby Crosby.

The highly-anticipated movie has had a long journey to release after being announced in early 2019.  It was previously set to debut on February 12, 2021, but was delayed to May 14 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The premiere was then switched yet again to its final date of Valentine’s Day 2022. Marry Me is directed by Kat Coiro (Girls5Eva) and also features stars Sarah Silverman, Chloe Coleman, John Bradley, Jimmy Fallon, and Michelle Buteau.

Universal Pictures dropped the first official trailer for Marry Me on November 18, treating the world to a look at the fun film. Teeing up the story, fans see Lopez and Wilson’s chemistry on full display. Check out the trailer below:

The trailer sets up Lopez and Wilson as diametrically opposite characters. Lopez’s Kat is half of a beloved celebrity power couple and about to marry Maluma’s Bastian before millions during a live-streamed concert event. Meanwhile, Wilson’s Charlie Gilbert is as far away from the pop culture world one can get, going along in life as a divorced high-school math teacher. Charlie gets dragged to Kat’s concert by his best friend (Silverman) and daughter Lou (Coleman).

Moments before the event is about to begin, Kat finds out Bastian cheated on her with her assistant. As she’s lifted onto the stage in a glitzy wedding gown, shock sets in. She sees Charlie in the crowd who, as fate would have it, holds up a “Marry Me” sign. While this is the title of Kat and Bastian’s chart-topping hit single, the singer takes it as a proposal and accepts. The rest of the film seems to be about the pair dealing with this impulsive onstage decision, and battling the age-old question: “Can two people from such different worlds bridge the gulf between them and build a place where they both belong?”

Like most rom-com trailers, the Marry Me montage gives away much of the plot. Of course, this flaunts the dazzling and heartwarming ride the picture promises viewers, at the center of which is Lopez and Wilson’s chemistry, something fans first experienced with the 1997 adventure flick Anaconda. If the trailer reveals anything, it’s that the onscreen flame between the two still burns brightly.
