Jedi Temple Challenge Trailer: It’s Basically Star Wars’ Legends of the Hidden Temple

The new trailer for Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge reveals that it’s basically Star Wars version of Legends of the Hidden TempleStar Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge is the latest in a long list of new Disney and Star Wars content coming out. Star Wars: The Clone Wars just finished up its final season earlier this year after a years-long hiatus. The Mandalorian season 2 will air this year in October. Filming was finished before the coronavirus lockdown, so it will fill the void left by the lack of new Star Wars movies this year.

The Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge show was originally announced late last year, as an upcoming Disney+ project. The premise of the Jedi game show was revealed at that time, as was Ahmed Best as host. Best is known for his role as Jar Jar Binks in the Star Wars universe. It was also announced that he would be joined by Veep actress Mary Holland, as a droid companion.

Much like the kids of the ’90s, Disney also seems to have seen the appeal in a show similar to Legends of the Hidden Temple. Disney and Star Wars released a trailer for a new upcoming game show, called Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge. The show will premiere with two full episodes on June 3, 2020. According to the press release, “the series tests young Padawans’ strength, knowledge, and bravery in a series of trials designed to discover who is capable of becoming a Jedi Knight.” The show will consist of 10 episodes and will now debut on StarWarsKids.com, as well as on the official Star Wars Kids YouTube channel. Check out the trailer.

The trailer opens on a logo of the Jedi Order, to a narration by Best. The trailer then shows clips of three teams of two kids completing physical and puzzle challenges. All the challenges are of course, Star Wars themed. The trailer also comes with the introduction of two new droids, while Best will play a new Jedi, Master Kelleran Beq. He’ll guide the contestants through three rounds of trials, and the winners will become Jedi Knights and wield the lightsaber. Holland will voice “the wise-cracking protocol droid AD-3,” while Sam Witwer will provide a “voice to the dark side of the Force.” Like Best, this isn’t Witwer’s first time in the Star Wars universe. Witwer previously voiced Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Palpatine in Star Wars Rebels, and did both the likeness and voice of Starkiller in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

Legends of the Hidden Temple was a Nickelodeon action-adventure/game show series that aired between 1993 and 1995. The television series revolved around a temple filled with lost treasures, to the backdrop of an ancient Mayan-themed set. The show seems to have all the same vibes as Legends of the Hidden Temple; it’s a game show with children contestants, aptly dubbed Padawans, and the challenges are reminiscent of those found on the old Nickelodeon show.

It seems that the show will be appealing to children, as well as any older fans of Legends of the Hidden Temple. It’ll also give Best a chance to redeem himself in the Star Wars universe, after the criticism Jar Jar Binks has received throughout the years. Even more importantly, it looks like Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge will be fun for the whole family.
