Jason Momoa’s Recasting Will Finally Give DC Its Version Of Wolverine

Jason Momoa’s potential recast could finally give the DCU its very own Wolverine. Despite his current role as the DCEU’s Aquaman, Momoa has been a popular fan cast for DC Comics’ Lobo for years, an intergalactic bounty hunter who is quite literally the embodiment of the gritty 90s and its hyper-violence. Now, a new DC Universe reboot is in the works from James Gunn and Peter Safran which may include Momoa in this completely different role.

Seeing Jason Momoa play “The Main Man” would be a dream come true for many fans (as well as for Momoa himself). To that end, it’s recently been reported that talks between Momoa and DC Studios have indeed happened regarding the actor’s future in the DCU, one that may very well leave Aquaman in the rearview. Here’s how Momoa can become the DCU’s Wolverine and why he’d be so perfect for the role.

Momoa’s Lobo Can Be The DCU’s Wolverine

Although he was created in 1983, Lobo did not reach his full potential until the 1990s when he was turned into a parody of the hyper-violent and gritty trends that had overtaken the comic book genre. However, Lobo was embraced by fans who loved how over-the-top he was, launching “The Main Man” into even greater prominence in the DC Universe than was ever intended. Originally, Lobo’s creators Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen simply wanted to make a satirical character based on anti-hero archetype characters of the era, most notably Marvel’s Punisher and Wolverine.

As such, Jason Momoa portraying a live-action Lobo could certainly give the upcoming DCU its own Wolverine. Although Lobo leans more chaotic than he does heroic as Wolverine does, the two characters are quite similar in that their stories are far more violent and intense than their fellow characters. Likewise, both of them are practically invincible which means their violence is even more extreme. Not unlike Wolverine himself, Lobo also has an impressive healing factor where he’s been able to come back from nothing more than a few drops of blood in the comics.

Why Jason Momoa Is Perfect For Lobo

Without question, Jason Momoa is the prime candidate to play Lobo in the new DCU. First and foremost, the resemblance between Momoa and “The Main Main” is very strong. Momoa looks so much more like DC’s intergalactic bounty hunter than he ever did as Aquaman. However, it cannot be overstated that Zack Snyder’s casting of Momoa as Arthur Curry was a brilliant decision, elevating the character’s cool factor to help combat the many stigmas and criticisms that perpetually exist regarding the King of Atlantis and his usefulness to the Justice League.

It certainly seems Lobo would be a role Momoa would be infinitely more comfortable playing. An anti-hero feels so right for Momoa based on his work beyond Aquaman (such as Fast X’s Dante Reyes), allowing him to be even more brutal in a role that’s far more unhinged and unleashed. Just like with Aquaman, Momoa will likely be able to inject his own personality into the role of Lobo, albeit to an even higher degree. It certainly doesn’t hurt that Momoa is a major Lobo fan himself, allegedly owning every Lobo comic published by DC Comics. If anyone knows how to bring “The Main Man” to life, it’s Jason Momoa.

Why Jason Momoa Remaining In The DCU Is Good News

On the whole, it’s incredibly exciting that Jason Momoa will continue to have a role in the new DCU. With the majority of the DCEU’s Justice League being recast or currently having unknown fates going forward, the growing momentum behind Momoa as Lobo is a great sign. Although Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has yet to be released, it’s no secret that the sequel has its fair share of controversy. As such, the pressure certainly seems to be off as far as Momoa is concerned.

The confirmation that Momoa has had talks to either be featured in Superman: Legacy or in a standalone film is very exciting. Given Lobo’s comics connections to both Superman and Green Lantern Guy Gardner who’s also confirmed to have a role in Legacy, the odds of Jason Momoa finally getting the chance to play “The Main Man” are quite high. As such, the DCU having its own Wolverine-type character would be a major win considering all the success the actual Wolverine has had on the big screen.
