Jason Momoa’s First Reaction To Peacemaker’s Aquaman Fish Joke

Jason Momoa’s First Reaction To Peacemaker’s Aquaman Fish Joke

[The following contains spoilers for the Peacemaker season 1 finale]

James Gunn reveals Jason Momoa’s reaction to Peacemaker’s Aquaman fish joke. John Cena’s would-be peacemaking The Suicide Squad character recently made the leap to the small screen and the result has been a huge hit for HBO Max and the DC universe.

Of course the highly-successful Peacemaker is to say the least far from being a normal run-of-the-mill superhero TV show. Right off the bat, the series began creating buzz with its unusually raunchy tone and hilariously foul-mouthed characters, with Cena’s Peacemaker leading the way in being as lewd and funny as possible. Peacemaker’s most shockingly profane utterances in fact concerned some of his fellow DC superheroes, as the character took aim at everyone from Superman to Batman to Aquaman. One joke about Arthur Curry garnered particular attention as it involved Peacemaker accusing the aquatic superhero of engaging in sexual relations with fish.

Aquaman star Momoa has thus far avoided making any public comment about Peacemaker accusing his character of engaging in unnatural acts with his fellow sea creatures. However, it appears Momoa is actually fine with the joke, at least according to Peacemaker creator and writer Gunn. Speaking to Variety, Gunn described how things went down when he discussed Aquaman appearing in the shocking Peacemaker season 1 finale and informed Momoa about the show’s Aquaman mockery:

I think before we ever shot the show, we talked to Jason about it. We were like, “Listen, [Peacemaker] says you f–k fish all the time.” And we were a little afraid he would be upset, but he just laughed. He was cool. So he was pretty much on board from the beginning.

Gunn has obviously expressed a certain gleeful attitude toward everything he’s been able to get away with on Peacemaker, including those profane jokes about other DC characters. That being the case, it’s a fair bet that even had Momoa objected to Aquaman being mocked by Peacemaker, the show would have still gone ahead and made the joke. All the same, it’s probably good that the joke has Momoa’s endorsement, as it might have created an awkward situation down the road had he not been OK with his character being defamed in such an obscene way.

Of course Aquaman was not the only character to get the Peacemaker treatment during the course of the show. Early on, Batman was also called out for being a p—y for refusing to kill his enemies, a joke that actually helped illuminate Peacemaker as a character as it demonstrated exactly where he stands on the subject of cold-blooded murder in the name of a good cause. Obviously the comedic mayhem on Peacemaker goes far beyond a few raunchy jokes about other DC characters, as the show has gone down some very perilous roads, even introducing a villain who is a white supremacist. But the show is also more than just a crazy series of gags and envelope-pushing plot twists, as it’s actually managed to delve into character in a legitimate way, making Cena’s Peacemaker much more three-dimensional and interesting along the way. And now more Peacemaker is in the offing after season 1 made such a huge splash on HBO Max, and it will indeed be fun to see what other DC characters get made fun of down the road.
